New - London to Lugano

Hello,

I thought I would introduce myself to the forum.
My name is John.
I am at this very moment in the process of moving from Kings Langley, Hertfordshire to Castel San Pietro, 2kms from Mendrisio and only a short drive to Lugano for a better way of life.
I shall be writing a blogg of what I am doing on here and hopefully draining your brains for information in the forum and hopefully able to help you as I research my planned business projects.

Regards....................John

ciao john!

I just moved to Lugano from Los Angeles two months ago. Mendrisio is really beautiful. I went there with some friends (met on this forum) to the wine festival a few weeks ago and had a blast!!!

welcome!

Welcome to Lugano!

I also arrived here in Lugano from London, but that was some 10 years ago...
Well, I suppose it means it's really nice here so you won't be disappointed with your choice.

Good luck with you BP

Thank you all.
I am going to need to drain your brains so that I can succeed in a business in Switzerland.
I am actually still clearing up things in the UK though resident in Switzerland officially.

Oh, there are people from Ticino region on this web site then. I thought they were all hanging out in Zurich!

I have no business as yet in Switzerland. I am still tidying up business matters in the UK.
I purchased an appartment block in Mendrisio through a company which I am director of. I didn't buy that as an investment or business, I purchased that so that my mother can remain living there and choose her own neighbours.

I am looking at various businesses to start up.
I have the advantage of dual nationality; British and Swiss, so no permit problems for me. I am still single so no financial committments/constraints/liabilities for me.

I am looking at the following business ideas at the moment:
1) Fronting Swiss companies as nominee shareholder and administrator of Swiss companies to help UK companies/UK citizens minimise their tax. ( I am a chartered accountant)
2) Purchase/Development/Re-sale of rustic houses as holiday homes and then offering a full management service of looking after those holiday homes in the Ticino area.
3) Property development/handy man
4) Selling the lifestyle of Ticino for UK people cheesed off with the UK.
5) Starting a chain of Indian Restaurants - or franchise - though not sure if Ticino Italian pallet would be interested.
6) Importing quality wooden furniture
7) Hand car wash/valeting in Lugano (as successful in UK)

I am not in a hurry as priority will be to learn Italian and find tenants for the appartments that are empty.

I am not so interested in the money as to try and enjoy life at last.

Well if you open an indian restaurant, you have a customer in me. I think even though I am not a brit (I'm French) but I have been in the Uk so long that I would prolly miss a good curry on a cold day!
My new colleagues did say that there wasnt one when I was there...

I cant wait to be there already!! 2 weeks to go!!!

Re: New - London to Lugano

Hand car wash business would be awesome for Lugano. There is none here!!! The only one we go to is in Como....not convenient at all.

There is an indian restaurant, www.degliamici.ch, that is quite delicious. A great business is indian DELIVERY. There's only pizza takeaway/delivery here in lugano. A lot of complaints i hear is the lack of delivery services. I would definitely be a regular client if you start an indian delivery (assuming it's delicious).

Hi, here's another keen curry person. Degli Amici is good but a tad expensive I find. Have you seen the information on the new Sri Lankan take-away in Massagno? It just appeared in a post the other day.
Well, if someone wants to emulate the EF lot in Zurich we could always organize a curry night sometime in late summer/early autumn.
Ciao

Re: New - London to Lugano

hi there,

it's been awhile; last year has been hectic, but I'm back to "normal" (never been normal in my whole life ).

How things are going in small Ticino's life? Enjoying?
A curry night would definitely suits me; I'm great fan of oriental food and I'm stuck in Lugano all summer (shoulder surgery ). Forgive me if I mispell something; I'm not used to typing left handed...

Let me know if somebody is around.

Take care
Daniela

PS: by the way, Cashboy, hoe did it go with your job search? We definitely share at least a couple of your...bullet points, me being an international tax and bank advisor...

I have to make some big decision; i.e. what to do with my life.
I have a couple of businesses in the UK which are not making any profit at all, though not loosing any monies either but taking up my time none the less. It would not take a lot to close them down and would be happy to do so.

I have a house in the UK which I have sold three times since May 2007 but has fallen through.
To give you an idea how bad the property market is in the UK.
The price I sold it for dropped from 735k to 615k in that time.
I only have an 80k mortgage so not worries of negative equity BUT:
On top of things, the GB pound fell from 2.40 SFR to 1.60 SFR so the money is worth little in CHF.

Then the apartment block that I bought in Ticino (4 apartments) that I bought because my mother wanted to live there; well she decided to move into Central Mendrisio which means we had to get a conciesse and find a tenent for the empty apartment.

So to put it mildly; I am well and truely p*ssed off!

I am lucky that I am single and solvent and potential but finding something to do that brings a good income in and I also enjoy is my major issue now and the house in the UK is trapping me.

I am actually stuck in the UK at the moment and wont be in Switzerland until September.

I would love to meet up with some of you and perhaps I can find the time to study a bit of Italian in the mean time.

Re: New - London to Lugano

poor thing,
I'm quite familiar with the picture. We manage few companies in UK on behalf of our clients and we have an office in London, I travel to and fro quite often and...I know .
But being a chartered accountant is quite an asset.

let's meet up in September while you're here in Tessin; (I've no trip to uk planned, can't flight or carry luggages right now )

Take care and enjoy the summer
Daniela
