Not so new in Zürich...

Even if it was 3.5 years ago I can still remember a chaoticMonday, 7th April 2008., my first day here in Zürich. At that point I didn'tknow if it was common for Zürich to be covered in snow in April and I couldremember I was among many people trying to make their way downhill from Witikonon foot since bus transport was in collapse. Only thing worse than that was a thought of howbad it would look if I was late on my first day of work. Another thing I wasn'taware of was whether it was common in Switzerland for a complete stranger tostop her car and to ask me if I needed a ride down the hill. Well, now aftermore the 3 years I know that answers to both of these questions are"no", but still they happened and marked the beginning of my lifehere…

Sohi to everyone I'm Ivan and came here from Croatia. I am 28 and work as a PhDstudent in biology at the ETHZ.

I have to say that even if I am here for more than 3 years it took me quitesome time to get on my own 2 feet. Namely, after 2 years I had to quit my firstPhD position and try to have a fresh start. Even if at that point I severelydoubted whether obtaining a PhD is a right option for me I ended up startinganother one. Suffice to say I am currently enjoying my work very much and washappy to leave all bad experiences behind.

Apart from work I have some time for drawing and I've taken up German, thistime I am being more serious about it. This season I am hoping to experiencesome winter sport action as well. (yes, yes even after 3 years here I don'tknow how to ski )

Since EF has provided me much useful info during my time here I thought it wouldjust be ok to join in and start posting as well. I hope I’ll fit in well.

Welcome to the Forum. Interesting Intro. It's always good to hear from folks who have overcome difficulties here and are now able to enjoy living in this strange country a bit more!

Re: Not so new in Zürich...

Hi Ivan, and welcome to a more 'active' role in the EF!

Strangely, I also had trouble with my first day at work in Switzerland due to public transport coming down from Witikon ... I had arrived in the country some three weeks beforehand, and even had two 'trial' trips to work before I started, yet on the day - they had track work, which meant the trams from Klusplatz were not going where they should have ... pity my German wasn't as good back then as it is now, or I would've read the big notice boards telling me of the upcoming track work!

Re: Not so new in Zürich...

Thank you so much for the warm welcomes Longbyt and tequila911.

Sagita, when I was younger I did a lot of my own comic book style drawings which I don't do so often anymore. Nowadays it's mostly just recreating interesting motifs I catch on camera on a piece of paper. I will check out the thread.

That is an interesting coincidence araqyl. Back then my German was also at the "ich möchte einen Kaffee bitte" level and I remember waiting patiently at the bus stop for quite some time trying to understand the announcements. Luckily for me there was only one road down the hill, so I was sure I wouldn't get lost. After all it allowed me to experience Swiss hospitality from the first hand. Could anyone ask for something better on their first day?
