Hello! From the sunny island of Singapore!

Just a quick hello to everybody out there! *wave*

We're a family of 5 from Singapore, though we haven't lived in the little red dot for almost 8 years now. We spent the last 4 years in London, and loved every bit of it.

Switzerland is great for us so far. We love the lakes, mountains, opportunities to travel etc. Love the cheese!! Looking forward to making some new friends here - and maybe going to one of those informal German conversation groups. We've been taking German classes for the last few months, but the going is proving to be quite tough. We're like fishes out of water most of the time...especially when official documents come through the mail all written in German.

Okay. That's about it for now. Thanks for reading!

Heya!! Ni hao! I don't speak Mandarin or Kantonese. But yeah welcome!!
I was born and bred in Ipoh but I've spent the last 10 years in KL. Where in Singapore are you and your family from?

Re: Hello! From the sunny island of Singapore!

I always get a bit tickled when I get asked that question - because Singapore is so tiny. But we stay in Pasir Ris - the town closest to the airport - the one that annoys the taxi drivers endlessly when we cab home from the airport, since most of them usually hope for a longer drive out to the ends of Jurong or Woodlands.

I've only been to Ipoh once, en route a trekking/camping trip at Cameron Highlands. It's quite a quiet little town, isn't it? But the coffee sure is good there!

Cool! Tsk tsk...taxi drivers! My mom lived in Bukit Timah with her family for quite a number of years when she was younger (teens, until she got married). Yeah but Petaling Jaya is pretty much home now. I guess home is determined more by where your family is more than where you were born or where you grew up! Although food wise- Ipoh is the bomb babey!!! LOL!

How are you guys coming along in Switzerland? I initially (still do, to a certain extent) found the language barrier to be my biggest challenge.

p.s. Ipoh was conferred a city-status (haha, not so much a quiet little town) in 1988

Re: Hello! From the sunny island of Singapore!

You're going to love Switzerland !

I moved over from London 3 months ago as well and i lived in England for the past 4 years. Almost similar to you, i haven't lived in Singapore for the past 11 years. The air in Switzerland is very much cleaner and the old people here do not use their maids to steal your taxis.

But i guess German/french is the annoying thing for non-speakers of that language here. I do not understand a single word of french or german here and all the letters are very unfortunately in those 2 languages. Even though Swiss people know english, they just refuse to converse in it. How very annoying !

Re: Hello! From the sunny island of Singapore!

whoops! *hehe* maybe it was the part of ipoh that we passed through en route to cameron highlands that was quiet. but yes! food is one of the main highlights! ipoh hor fun - you can't get more authentic hor fun than that!

we're enjoying switzerland so far. we love driving out to the nearby countries to sight-see, relax and just EAT without breaking the bank! we just drove down south to rome & naples not too long ago. it was a good trip, but the traffic in rome was impossible!

and the language barrier - yeah! doesn't really help that we're not learning swiss german in school, i guess. but let's do it slowly - i'm sure we can get used to it one day!

Re: Hello! From the sunny island of Singapore!

hiya! yes, the air is refreshingly clean in most areas here - though i wouldn't say the same for the air in the zurich HB!

re: old people - i find them quite a unique group (as a whole!) compared to the ones in UK or Singapore. they're generally more vocal and less hesitant in letting you know what they think. most of my encounters with them are quite pleasant so far, coz' i have young children. for the more 'memorable' one or two times - well, i just shrug it off. i couldn't really understand what the issue was anyway!

Re: Hello! From the sunny island of Singapore!

Greetings!

My family has been living in Singapore for the past 11 yrs and will be relocating to Zurich soon. We've stayed in the Tanjong Rhu area, Pasir Panjang and the Woodlands during that time.

Any advice for international lower-upper schools as well as housing are most welcome.

Thanks!
