Re: From Finland to Switzerland (maybe?)

Thanks cst, Uncle Max and FMX I am living at Vantaa, and have been living at the southern regions of Finland all of my life. I have been thinking about moving abroad for a couple of years, and from last spring I have been doing pre-studies of places I would want to go and placed some applications for open positions to various companies. Now flights have been booked and appointments made, I am coming to Switzerland at the end of this month for interviews and see the places. Even if I don`t get job, I will be happy that I got the change to visit the Switzerland Just noticed that there is a pressure to limit EU-workers coming to Switzerland, hopefully I am not too late for this train :P

Re: From Finland to Switzerland (maybe?)

Sniveri, I think it's a great idea to spend some time living in another country. I recommend you take the plunge if the opportunity arises! And if it doesn't work out, Finland is really close, so you can always go back.

It's good that you will visit Switzerland to do some interviews and have a chance to look around a bit. When I moved here, I interviewed over the phone and had never been to Europe before!

Re: From Finland to Switzerland (maybe?)

Hello Sniveri,

Welcome to EF Switzerland!! As you may know, this site is thoroughly informative for job hunting etc and please check out the threads on employment in detail regarding recruitment agencies, taxation and the like aswell as events to meet people here.

I am also contemplating permanently moving to Zurich from my current residence in Valencia, Spain.

I will arrive with absolutely no plan whatsoever on 24th of this month with just a small suitcase so it is daunting to say the least!

I also plan to dip my feet in the water and see how things are here workwise. I do not expect it will be easy to find work initially but who knows, we may be lucky!

Anyway if you wanna meet up let me know because I will be in the city for three weeks starting from 24th jan, flat and job hunting and I am completely alone

Regards

Liam

I did a short trip to Switzerland week ago and had interview. From my point of view job interview went really well. Just today I got mail that I was not selected for this position. Well.. can`t win everytime, have to do more applications I liked the places and how restful the countryside at Switzerland can be. Hopefully I get second chance soon

And you found this out how exactly? Did someone tell your that or did you come to this conclusion yourself?

It's tough times both in Switzerland and back in Finland so it's not always easy to nail a job even with good qualifications so I wouldn't give up on hope if this is your dream we're talking about.

Well the business I am in are nowadays mostly done at India. Where would you found out the best experts if not in the country where the actual job is done in the first place? I still have a dream, but I have to work REALLY hard to make this become true. I mean specializing my skills so much that there is no questions, when they are making decisions.

Re: From Finland to Switzerland (maybe?)

Had to update this thread as I now live in Winterthur Couple of days has already passed and no fines for parking/speeding or polizei behind the door after nightly showers/flushing toilet

Probably the weirdest thing was actually getting in the country. I had prepared all the docs for importing car and household items, and at the border conversation went like this:

O: Do you have any cigarettes or alcohol?
M: No.
O: What is the purpose of the trip?
M: I am moving to Switzerland.
O: What you have in your car?
M: My personal stuff as I am moving.
O: Ok, you are good to go.

Car was absolutely filled up with stuff and no documents or passport was asked and nothing had to be paid.. Probably nothing wrong here, but then again I would most likely to get my car registered with Swiss plates in future and I am pretty sure then some importing docs are asked.. ( If someone knows what to do now, it would be helpful )

Also something weird was at the registration office, probably I had understood it wrongly but I was under impression that HR of the company where I am starting to work should have done all the needed permission docs already, and I was just informing about my address at the registration office. But seems that the process was actually now started by me and for that time I am not much able to do anything here, like making mobile or internet contracts etc before I get the B-permit.

But in otherways things seems to work as planned, I have really nice apartment, everyone seems to be helpful around here even without common language and bicycling possibilities in this city are absolutely great!

Kiitos

I mailed to customs office and explained what happened and after couple of hours my phone rang, we talked a bit and only visit at the customs office is needed with couple of CHFs and documents I was really happy, otherwise I would not have got any sleep at the weekend as I happened to read the legal parts relating to my case from the customs site and got a bit cold sweat going on

I am planning to keep the Finnish plates as long as possible, mostly because of cheaper insurance + everyone then sees that there goes that stupid Finn and they can show fist from the window and yell some insults Actually I am not planning to use the car much, just for transporting stuff if needed, so I would not be needing "man with van" And seems that car is needed if you are planning to recycle your trashes in proper way.

Probably after getting the mobile contract and air conditioner I would feel like in home at here

Don't forget to print this out in a large Font and hang it on the wall above your desk. Times change... You might need to be reminded of it later.

True, time change...but I would also add > avoid reading complains on EF or take them with a pinch of salt! * I admit they are my guilty pleasure tho
The Swiss are not that bad as they say..
