Just moved to Biel/Bienne

Hi All,

Less than a month ago I moved over to Biel from Dublin. No, I am not Irish, I am originally Polish, but after spending 6 years in that beautiful country, I consider it my second home.

I am still looking for a job and it's proving pretty difficult as I don't speak German or French and apparently everyone in Switzerland is AT LEAST trilingual. Yes, I am not impressed at all!

I've recently started snowboarding and so far managed to break no bones. As I am a beginner I am hoping to find people who are also struggling to keep their balance going down the slope (putting you weight on the front foot is hard!) and go on snowboarding trips during the week (till I find a job, that is).

I am also trying to learn German (even thinking of joining an intensive course) so if anyone's living close to Biel and could help me master the language quicker, I'd really appreciate it.

Re: Just moved to Biel/Bienne

Hi Daria, welcome to the Forum. What were you doing in Ireland?

Why did you choose to live in Biel/Bienne? It is not an easy town to find work.

Without any national languages, you need to start looking at cleaning jobs and factory work.
Avoid working on farms, that is VERY strenuous.

Re: Just moved to Biel/Bienne

hi Sprinz,

I was working in a call centre in Ireland and moved to Biel as the BF was offered a job here.

And yes, I have noticed that finding a job when you don't speak German or French is close to impossible but not losing hope.

Welcome to the forum!
Bienne is a cool city, I love the bi-lingual vibe going on.
You'll find work if you keep on. Why don't you apply to some job agencies, and perhaps get into watch-making. You can start at basic assembly for a good salary, and you have Rolex just on your doorstep.
They don't need any specialist qualifications, you just need to show them that you're quick and intelligent!
Anyway, good luck

Thx Sapin, I will need all the luck I can get
And good idea on the Rolex job. I have to start somewhere, I suppose.

Re: Just moved to Biel/Bienne

Welcome DariaMG,

Good luck with the job hunting; but if you are feeling a little on the outskirts of the town due to the language barrier, there is a bar I was in called 'the garage' which seems to be run by a Dubliner, and is generally as close to a Dublin style 'local' bar as you will get, might be worth a look, even if it is just to hear some familiar accents!

I'm a huge fan of Biel too. But you are right. They all speak both French and German there. So without either you're in a bit of a pickle. However, you are close enough to lots of other places. So expand your search area.

Good luck!

Yeah, I have noticed that finding something here w/out German or French is close to impossible so I am looking elsewhere. I did start learning German though so fingers crossed I should be fluent in no time Lol.

And thanks for the "good luck" wishes. Will need all the luck I can get
