Moving to Zurich from London in March 2012

Hello everyone!

Thought I would introduce myself as I am moving to Zurich in a few weeks.

My work have sorted out a temporary apartment for me to live in near the office in Oerlikon. If anyone has any recommendations for where to shop, eat or drink in Oerlikon please let me know.

I'm interested in health and fitness, yoga and cooking so again any recommendations would be much appreciated. I am coming to Zurich by myself and am feeling a little apprehensive so please be gentle with me!

Thanks everyone.

Re: Moving to Zurich from London in March 2012

welcome to switzerland,my name is jackie and i have lived here with my family for a bit over 2 years. i will give you a little heads up before you get here. We like it here but the only problem is that we have had a very difficult time making friends with the swiss. They keep to themselves which is a bit weird for us. We have never had such a problem in our lives, we are a very out going american family too, maybe that is the problem with them towards us, so let me know if you have any questions in the future and take care!

Thanks. I'm aware that generally the Swiss can be quite reserved but good to have a heads-up so that I know in advance.

Re: Moving to Zurich from London in March 2012

Hi and welcome

You'll be glad to hear that Oerlikon is quite nicely situated, being near to Hallestadium and theatres etc. Will be well placed to get to see lots without having to go too far. I'm just down the road, but have friends from here in Oerlikon, and did some german courses there.

Can't help you with your shopping info, sorry, but obviously I do mine in my village.

Switzerland is a real nice place, scenery is spectacular. There are plenty of events organised by people on here, so you should be able to get out and about quite quickly.

Hope you enjoy yourself,

Chris

Aldi in Oerlikon is super cheap (by Swiss standards) might be worth checking out.

Re: Moving to Zurich from London in March 2012

Hi NewGirlinZurich,

I have been here 5 months or so now having moved from London, so please feel to message me if you have any questions as I have probably been through most of the things.

I work near Oerlikon and its a nice place with almost everything you need. Good trainsport links, all the major shops and a few nice resturants and bars (depending on what you are looking for of course)

There are also alot of Gyms and fittness studios in the area but I would probably ask your company if they have a deal somewhere. Zurich and Switzerland is great for outdoor activities.
I have seen a few yoga places around.

Cooking in terms of classes etc seems very difficult here, I have been looking myself and either none or very expensive!

As for shopping if you mean supermarket you have all the major ones in the area:

+ Migros - Major supermarket, does not sell alcohol and is fairly expensive
+ Coop - Like Migros but serves alcohol, both a major and small store in Oerlikon and open late

Budget:
+ Denner - Budget brand of Migros, serves alcohol and basic stuff as well as bulk deals. Normally good value
+ Aldi - German budget store, good value and better quality then store in UK (watch weekly deals for bargains)
+ Lidl - Like Aldi.

Watch out as none of the supermarkets are open on Sundays, Really only a few shops, within main Train stations are open on Sundays! This is always a big shock coming from UK.

Restaurant:
Orlikon has a good selection, with two that seem to standout:
1. Asiaway - Good Vietnamese and Asian food at reasonable prices
2. Rolli's - Swiss steakhouse

Bars:
There are a few 'pubs' and winebar type places, nice for relaxing drinks if that is what you like. Best to take walk around and see when your here!

Welcome to the forum. In my opinion, the sooner you start grasping the language the easier it is to fit in and form friendships with the locals. They really appreciate the effort as you can imagine...

Aldi by the way is definately one of the cheaper alternatives. Unfortunately we don't have one where I live...

Hello, out walking by the river today I saw this place advertized http://yogaamfluss.ch/ prehaps not the closest place to Oerlikon, but it does look very nice. Might be worth a look.

Re: Moving to Zurich from London in March 2012

I went to pilates classes in Oerlikon with Catherine Wiget. I have had several pilates teachers in the Uk and her classes were by far the best I've experienced: http://www.pilatesstudio-zurich.com/

Prices are high for any sort of class compared with the UK, but her classes are very small which certainly justified it for me.

Re: Moving to Zurich from London in March 2012

Hi! Early welcome in Zürich.
Oerlikon area has quite a couple of things to offer.

Fitness:
- Migros Klubschule (basically has all the lessons you would be interested in, fitness, yoga, cooking and language). Personally I have tried only a cooking lesson and I have to say it was above my expectations. Thai cooking! Amazing!
- www.nordfit.ch (gym)

Restaurant:
Swiss Hotel has a really nice bar.
Mexican place called Tres Amigos (www.tresamigos.ch)

Send me a PM if you would like to go for a coffee and ask tons of questions to smooth your transition!

Re: Moving to Zurich from London in March 2012

Welcome! I agree with trying your best to learn the language before moving. My family and I will be moving in June and we were just there last week looking for a place. Anyway, everyone we came across was extremely nice and got a kick out of our little German to English book and the effort we were making to at least speak SOME German. Even if all it was was please and thank you!

I also moved from London to Zurich although Ive been here for 4 months now. If you ever want to have a coffee and chat about zurich life let me know I love yoga too but havent been able an affordable class. Looking forward to the summer as apparently there are cheaper yoga sessions outside beside the lake!

Re: Moving to Zurich from London in March 2012

Welcome to the Forum and to Switzerland! I also made the move here on my own (about 4 months ago), and am still finding it a bit hard to meet new people. I live a bit outside of Zurich, so that might be part of my problem. :-)

Once you get settled, if you'd like to meet for a drink, let me know!

Good luck with the move!

Re: Moving to Zurich from London in March 2012

Hi,

We lived in Oerlikon when we first moved to Zurich. It has good transport links,

supermarkets and open markets. It also has a good variety of restaurants and bars and is cheaper than downtown Zurich.

Good luck with your move.

Re: Moving to Zurich from London in March 2012

I found this place for English speaking yoga classes (central Zürich/Johanna Rose)
http://www.leelayoga.ch/zurich/contact

I would recommend that you don't bring too much stuff over/buy too many things in case you don't like the place and decide to leave....I'm going in the opposite direction

If you do decide to stay...Zürich is very bike friendly and it's a nice way to explore and get some exercise at the same time
