Been here a week

Hi, I moved to Vaud a week ago today. Have taken a year’s sabbatical from work to live with my husband who has been working in Vevey for the past 9 years commuting to and from the UK every week. He has now had more than enough of flying home weekends and wants a year of little travel. I have been lurking in the back ground reading posts for the past 4 month - since work agreed to my career break. Thanks to the EF I found out what to pack, what items to bulk buy and bring with me, learnt lot about the Swiss way of life and above all you lot have made me laugh.

Re: Been here a week

Welcome!
Your situation is very similar to mine and hubby's. He came to Switzerland in 1999 and I stayed in the UK, where I worked full time. We both spent the next few years flying to and fro between the two countries. In 2003 I had a three month career break, then in 2006 a six month one. In 2007 I gave up work and moved here permanently.
We were very lucky as we managed to pay off our mortgage in the UK, and we now rent out our house (which hasn't been all plain sailing, but that's another story).
I love life here, it isn't always perfect, living together full time took some getting used to, but I am so glad I took the plunge.
Good luck, enjoy your year together, who knows what it may lead to.

Re: Been here a week

Thank you for your reply.
I think my hubby is hoping that I will love the Swiss way of life and like you, will want to move over here at the end of my year off work. It sounds like you made the right decision and are happy and settled over here. Your reply certainly gave me food for thought
We have rented a bigger apartment as the one he was renting when on his own was too small for the two of us full time (one of us would have launched the other off the balcony over time). Getting the apartment sorted is keeping me occupied but I do need to sort out some French lessons and try and meet people to give Switzerland a fair chance. I have noticed that most of the social events are in Zurich not much going on in Vaud unfortunately.

Re: Been here a week

Hi there,
Welcome to Vaud...
I am near Vevey; there doesn't appear to be a huge amount of English-speaking socialising going on here, or maybe I have just failed to find it!
I am on a career break too, to be with my partner who live here.
Maybe we should strike up a social group in Vevey, to fill the gap.
