Driving in the UK/Swiss

Hi everyone,

I am in a bit of a pickle and would appreciate some advice...

I am a British citizen who has been spending the last year travelling between Switzerland and England. I own a car in the England which is too old to bring over to Switzerland but is very useful when I am in the country. I now have to convert my British driving license to a Swiss one and my UK insurance company tells me they can no longer insure me if I do this. I will be travelling to and fro for at least another year (on maternity).

Does anyone know who I can get insurance from (in the UK?) if I convert my license?

I know the easiest thing would be to sell the car but that's not possible at the moment.

Thanks in advance!

I was in exactly the same position and I just had to sell my car in the UK. A total pain, but I just didn't find another way.

This has been discussed endlessly with respect to Switzerland, and you can search the Forum for details.

UK driving licence - returning to the UK - insurance costs

The answer is no. You will have to hire a car, or take the bus.

Re: Driving in the UK/Swiss

I owned a car in the U.K. with a South African drivers license and with my girlfriend as a second driver on the policy with a Polish drivers license. I find it hard to believe that there is not an insurance company that will insure you. I was insured both through Tesco and Direct Line. Both charged slightly more due to the foreign licenses, both were more concerned with us being over 25 and having no claims in the last 5 years.

Shop around, I am sure you will find one.

Try Chruchill, I am insured on my Partners car being a Swiss resident with a Swiss licence. I don't even think they charged me extra or if they did it was so small I didn't notice

Re: Driving in the UK/Swiss

My father lives in London and owns a VW car. He went to Frizzell a large London insurance broker, and there he was told there was no possibility of putting me as a second driver on the insurance policy, as I was not UK resident, and it would not be legal.

As often happens, insurance agents take your premiums and neglect to point out the small clauses, then when you make a claim they point to the clause xyz.123 which clearly states no cover.

You could ask for a quotation online; it will be refused,
