I live in Basel.......
Current rent for our 120 m2 3-bedroom apartment (they call it 4.5 room, but it really has only 3 bedrooms) is 2500 CHF/month
NB: If you're looking in Geneva the room count for an appartment is different to the other cantons, the kitchen is counted separately; even if it's part of the living-room but the floor area is deemed large enough.
A 4.5-piece will only have two bedrooms, not three as in the example given above.
So two bedrooms, living-room, kitchen and the extra .5 cited will come from either a large hallway, a reduit/store-room without a window or just possibly an extra-large living-room.
I've never really managed to work out the french system, but think it's along the lines of the other cantons. A T1 is a studio, T3 is a two-bed plus living-room.
Bathrooms don't usually have windows here either (odd to people from the UK but pretty normal here).

Living in a 100sq metres appartment is fine with two children, we did it with two adult sons until we moved out to get away from them (I'm joking, honest).

If you find somewhere on a tram or bus route you might consider not having a car.... just hiring one for the weekends if you need one. That would save a bit, parking spaces are often extra and can add 2-300 francs a month on top of your rent.

Thanks Anjela for the note, this is good advice and something I shall consider when we go over to view some properties.

Re: UK Family of 4 moving to Switzerland

Joolie, I am still in the process of discussions with HR, seems they're still yet to offer the package to me in the interest of ensuring what is offered to me is enough to tempt me over to Switzerland.

I hope for my own sake, and the sake of those that helped me on this thread, that I get above and beyond the salary expectation. In which case, it would be an easy "yes" and a move in Sept/Oct this year.

I shall keep you all posted

Re: UK Family of 4 moving to Switzerland

Don't do anything for my sake. Just make sure your BASE salary is enough, and don't be convinced by a TOTAL salary number that includes a bonus. If you ever want to buy a house here, Swiss banks are definitely not impressed with bonus, and will only look at the base salary unless you have received your bonus for 3 successive years. And only then they count 80% of your average bonus.

Therefore, I would suggest to aim for a minimum of 110k base salary. Whatever the bonus is, it will be a very nice extra.
