New to Basel

Hello everyone,

I'm an American female, new to Basel and would like to know more about the city. Things to do and see. Besides my boyfriend, I don't really know anyone here. Would like to cultivate a circle of my own friends. I don't speak a word of Swiss German ...yet...but I do speak Italian...though I'm starting to lose it.
Anyway....just wanted to introduce myself.

Thanks!

Molly

Re: New to Basel

Hi Molly,

Welcome to Basel. I know the feeling. I moved here from North Carolina in Nov 2011 and speak very little German and do not have any friends yet.
I do not work so I have alot of free time if you would like to meet and venture around town let me know.

Glenn.

Re: New to Basel

Hello P.Tweedy, Meeyat & Tattoo,

Really nice to see the replies from you guys. Makes me feel less lonely. My boyfriend went back to his parents home for the night ( Shaffhausen) so I'm on my own. Jumping on the chance to wash clothes ( SOOOOOO EXCITING) but since there is only 2 days a week ( and we leave Wed for Dublin for a week) this is my change for the week. Meeyat, I saw your posting about the beers at the pub. I was thinking about this, but still not sure yet. How would I find the group...just look for the group of people speaking English? I was perhaps thinking of going to the cinema, but the cost of a ticket here is simply CRAZY expensive! And then I was also thinking of catching a jazz concert at the Bird's Eye jazz club. Not sure if any tickets still remain. But they are not so expensive. In the end I'll probably stay home and watch TV....hahahha
I'm taking the train early in the morning to Fribourg to see a former student of mine who lives there....but I would most def like to meet you guys sometime. Not sure how long I'll be here since the job hunt is not going as well as planned, but it would be nice to meet others new or not so new to Basel.
Let's keep in touch, ok?
Molly

Hey Molly,

Hope you found something to do. Yes the movie tickets here are very expensive and are usually movies that we can get on iTunes already. Maybe if you have time we can grab a coffee and I can show you around. I'm from California so Switzerland is a big change for me. What are your hobbies? You can PM if you like as well.

Re: New to Basel

Hi Molly and welcome to Switzerland! I'm in a similar position, being a newbie (2 months) and not speaking the language (though I am teaching myself a bit of both French and German).
Hopefully, by now you'd have probably made some local friends (English speakers) like I have.
Good luck!

Jules

Re: New to Basel

I'm always up for a cup of coffee.. or going for any other suggestions (even if I can't drink alcoholic beer for the moment). This is really the only week I seem to be busy, mostly with taking care of the logistical parts of moving, like registering for residency and getting my dog to the vet for his 1st check in Switzerland.

Re: New to Basel

Welcome to the city. There are many things to do around the area, as well as the socials here... something like 1/3 of Switzerland's museums, the Roman City of Augusta Raurica and one of the biggest spa's in Switzerland at Sole Uno...

I also organise the wall climbing for English forum people in Basel if you are interested
