Hello Everyone

Just to introduce myself, a move is imminent for our family from uk to Lausanne, hoping to move during the school summer holidays. My hubby is dutch and I am british, we have 3 children 10,7,5, and have moved around a fair bit!
In fact the 10 year old was born in Vevey, so we look forward to living on the lake again.
Last time this forum didn't exist but good for me now I have more need with a family. I plan to be SAHM at least at first and no idea how long we would be staying, but at least 3 years.
We will be local so the kids will go to local school
I can already see that this forum will be a great knowledge resource, thanks to all of you for posting information. It's all very exciting!
Will get back again later to try and meet some of you great expats, for now I will get to work searching and reading all the things i want to know, too many!!

Pippa

Re: Hello Everyone

Well let's hope you are not disappointed. Not sure how long since you lived here, but in the four years I have been here, there has been a dramatic downshift in many areas, notably the number of immigrants, begging, crime rates through the roof, cranes everywhere, cost of living. So be prepared. It is not a cheap option. My husband is very well paid, and we still struggle to afford lots. I even now worry like I used to in the UK about my handbag not being safe whilst in the supermarket and dread turning my back on it for a minute. Also even where we live, up in mountains, there have been burglaries and car thefts. So I suggest leaving off your rose tinted spectacles. Sorry to be negative but forewarned is forearmed.

Re: Hello Everyone

You guys have had a sheltered existence! When you've lived in some "rough parts" (understatement) of Northern Britain, everywhere feels safer, even in Geneva, the crime capital of Switzerland!

Re: Hello Everyone

thanks for all the welcomes. well looks like we are making the move!! So time to start organising. Have to post some of my wanted list soon. Job start date down as 1st August so I hope we will be moving in the summer. Just worrying about how long it takes to find home, car etc and settle the children in school. We were there 10 years ago, but have been back twice recently for family holiday and a look-see visit, it didn't seem too bad to me!! obviously Lausanne isn't Montreaux, is more of a city feel with the people that go with it, but that's nice isn't it, one problem we had last time was that CH is a bit quiet as we had lived in china before that, which is anything but quiet.

Would appreciate contact with anyone who has children in schools (primary) in St sulpice, preverenge, ecublen, echanden areas, how do they get on and is there plenty to do??
Better stop as its getting a bit long!!

Re: Hello Everyone

I lived in York for 12 years before moving to Switzerland 9 years ago. I was a street performer in King's Square and also a guide on the Ghost Hunt www.ghosthunt.co.uk Next time you're on the Shambles, say a quick hello from me to my friend John who owns the small sweet shop and tell him I'd appreciate if he sent me some Midget Gems.
