Looking for young South Africans living in Switzerland!

Hey guys!

I'm a 22 year old South African girl living in Zurich and studying at the University of Bern. I grew up in SA but moved here three years ago to study. At the moment I'm doing a research project at uni and my main focus is going to be South Africans who have left SA and moved to Switzerland because they are looking for better opportunities or a change of scenery. I have a feeling there are quite a few of you out there but I'm having trouble finding you... if you're interested in helping me out just by answering a few questions or helping me meet other South Africans that would be awesome... so just let me know!

Re: Looking for young South Africans living in Switzerland!

Welcome to the Forum. Your Introduction post will likely slip to the bottom of the page quite quickly - and thus be unnoticed by the folk you hope to reach. You might have to do a bit more investigating.

Doing a search under Community > Member List > Search Members >advance search and then putting SA or similar under Nationality will turn up a few. See if any of them have posted on a similar subject to this before and awaken a relevant thread in another part of the forum. Or if you look for 'Biltong' on here, you'll likely find a couple of posts and may even find hints as to where they meet up!

Good luck.

Re: Looking for young South Africans living in Switzerland!

Hi there!

I am from South Africa!Born in Johanesburg!

Although I moved to Portugal when I was quite young. Anyway now I have moved to Switzerland, to Bern, since January because of my new job.
I am an architect and industrial designer and I have long working days, so it is not easy for me to meet new people, besides the ones that I work with (boring ). So I would love to try and make new friends, southafrican or not, to maybe have a drink on weekends, or go snowboarding or something.

Please let me know if you would like to get in touch

bye!

Indeed - she goes to Bern via Friburg and will happily stop there to agree with your argument if you'd like some biltong, drywors, chili bites or boerewors as well...

Hello Kavron
So you are trying to move from South Africa to Portugal?
I feel I should just let you in on a few things about Portugal. At the moment the country is going through an economical crises, wich means not enough jobs, salaries are beeing cut down, and rising taxes.
I consider myself portuguese and I love my country, but I really wouldn't advise you to move there at the moment, especially if you are a Draughtsman looking for a job in the construction sector. This sector has came to a stop over the last 4 or so years, and it doesnt look like it's going to get any better any time soon.
I had to leave the country in search of work, and like myself there are thousands leaving every month. So I would forget about moving there for the next 5 years.

I am sorry to bring you bad news, but that is probably why you are struggling to find work there.
If you still want to try your luck, do you know the Instituto de Emprego e Formação Profissional? (http://www.iefp.pt/Paginas/Home.aspx) It is like the state work agency, but at the moment the have so many people in it that they do not have enough jobs for everyone. Do you speak portuguese?

Regards
Peter

Do you know the World Architects site?
http://www.world-architects.com/en/job-seekers

They have a pretty good job section for Switzerland and Germany.

Good luck

Hi Lacoln

Im the SA student Reon mentioned. Im not sure if I still count as young as I am 28 years. I left SA just 2 months ago to pursue a LLM at the University of Bern. I was a practicing attorney in Mafikeng and Johannesburg.

I left SA because I wanted to gain experience. I felt frustrated in SA career wise and socially. I am "coloured", my dad is German and my mom is black and having grown up in SA, I used to face many stereotypes...Almost on a weekly basis, I found myself having to defend who I am, why I dont speak Afrikaans, why Im not like other coloured people etc...But its all good now!

Anyway, would love to meet up an chat and perhaps enjoy some of Reon's boerewors!

Hi there,

So far, in CH, im considered black...In the two months ive been here, nobody has asked me what is my race...they just assume im black!...back home, I always get asked how does it feel to have a white father!

You are right about human nature....

Hi

Born and bred in South Africa and have been living in the Aglo of Basel for more than 33 years and seem to like it, only when it gets cold I freak, especially when I read on facebook that in South Africa they have enough heat to send it to my house for the next 10 years.
