am i really moving to lausanne

I'm scheduled to be in Lausanne with my wife and 2 kids starting Jan 08. I will be studying at EPFl for a year. Can't believe that we're going to do this. There seems to be so much to do....somewhere to live, health insurance......please reassure us!!!

Re: am i really moving to lausanne

I moved here 9 years ago to st.gallen to be with my husband (at the time fiance) i was also very nervous when i first moved here i was homesick missed everything about england, but now i wouldnt move back to england for anything i have also 2 children and switzerland is the best place to bring children up its so clean and beautiful, but the best thing is the safety for the children.

Re: am i really moving to lausanne

Welcome to the forum Gary. It sounds like an exciting move for you. My advice is to see if you can find temp accommodation for a month or so while you look round, rather than trying to find the ideal place for the entire stay via the Internet. I don't know about Lausanne, but certainly there are places in Zurich which offer furnished apartments on a monthly basis. It's a bit more expensive than a real apartment, but at least you are not committing yourself to something which might turn out to be a mistake!

I guess language won't be a problem - assuming you are coming from French part of Canada?

Good luck. Try not to worry.

Re: am i really moving to lausanne

Welcome to the forum,

For me, I came to Lausanne from the UK, and wouldn't go back if they doubled my pay. For bringing up kids, I would so much prefer to do that here....they have so many more advantages than the UK at least, and I'm quite jealous of them.

ReadingSteve's idea is not bad at all (p.s. Go on you Royals!). OK Logements is one place that does month by month rents of furnished appartments. Could be helpfull as cheaper than a hotel I guess and it can take a little while to sort permanent accomodation.

Good luck!!

Re: am i really moving to lausanne

Hi Gary!

Don't worry, there is a lot to organise before and after the move but once you've settled down here it really is worth it.

I moved here 18 months ago and wouldn't dream of going back to England now. There is so much on offer here and I've found my standard of living is far better here than it ever was in England.

You've come to the right place to find answers to pretty much all of your questions (I wish I'd found it before I moved) so you're starting off very well.

Good luck with the move

Re: am i really moving to lausanne

Thank-you everybody for your words of encouragement! Now if only I can find somewhere to live. Coming with a family makes it a little more important to have something set up. I did look up the furnished apartments... a little pricey but don't know what we'll do otherwise.......
