Does anyone live in/around Fribourg town?

Hi. My family and I are planning on moving to Fribourg. Now I was wondering which towns/areas of Fribourg are nice places to live in (family friendly, hiking/cycling possiblities, close to school/bus)... which ones are the nicest Swiss towns or areas around/close to Fribourg? How are people like in Fribourg (more relaxed than people in the Swiss German regions)? :-)

Looking forward to getting in touch with a couple of nice people here :-)

GreetZ

Hi
Welcome to the forum

I like the area around Fribourg. It is very much traditional Switzerland and at the same time you can find (almost) everything you need.
Cost of living is also far lower than in most places like Geneva, Basel and Zurich.
It is still a catholic stronghold, meaning families are advantaged.
I have lived in Geneva, Neuchatel and Vaud, and really like Fribourg.

Nice towns in the canton are in my opinion Estavayer-le-lac and Morat, and of course Fribourg itself (probably the best bet). Morat is mostly German-speaking while Fribourg is mostly French-speaking.

If you have further questions please do not hesitate!

Fribourg is lovely! We were there just yesterday. Great sense of history and lots of well-behaved [mostly] students at the university. Lovely architecture as well as everything one needs, even if this is somewhat outside the city.

Re: Does anyone live in/around Fribourg town?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I have made Fribourg my home for the last two years, and find it a great place to live in - a bit on the quite side though - which is what I love.

We (wife & I) have two school going children, now attending local public schools. Both the kids got a lot of support from the schools to integrate into into the system, and are doing well.

I was earlier living close to the gare, but found it extremely noisy - rowdy drunks singing in the street till late on weekend nights. Recently moved to a neighboring commune - Villars sur Glane - which I find absolutely perfect in all respects : school, shopping, public transport, parking, outdoors etc.

In case you need any help - PM :-)

SVA

Re: Does anyone live in/around Fribourg town?

We've been living in Villars-sur-Glâne (3.5km from Fribourg centre) for the last 14 years and are very happy in the Fribourg area. We're only 25 mins from some great local skiing/hiking/MTBing. Plenty of local forests for walks and biking and a truly beautiful traditional old town on the banks of the Sarine. It is a little quite regards nightlife etc, but there are one or two good, lively bars for that kind of debauchery .
Welcome to Fribourg, hope you enjoy living here.

What kind of cycling? MTB or road? I take my MTB out 2 to 3 times a week in the evnings and have a few nice local trails I use regularly. Nothing too strenuous, farm tracks and forests mainly, but a bit muddy after all the recent rain though.

Hi,
SVA thank you for your answer it was very helpful to me because my kids are also starting school this August. We used to live 12years ago very close to Sion (Valais). We are very happy to be living close to Fribourg, as we could go and visit the city which is wonderful and a university town. I am also an architect like you but I have been teaching languages for the last 2 decades. Hope that maybe we could organize getting together with everyone that lives close by Fribourg in order to get to know each other.
Hope to see you soon,
Florencia

Well, if you prefer the urban life, you could live in Fribourg. We live in the center of town. Sometimes there is a bit of noise at night mainly because of this center situation, but it has huge advantages; kids walk to school, (3 to 5 mn), food shopping just down my staircase, almost no need for a car and so escaping trafic jams in the town center, close to the train station, a 3 mn walk to the movies or the theater... When I go mountainbiking, it takes me some 10 mn to be out of town in the surrounding forests.

If city life is not required, I would choose Villars sur Glâne for its general quality of life.
