Moving from California to Fribourg

Greetings, fellow English speakers!

I've been lurking on this forum for a few weeks now. My husband, myself and our 3 year old are planning a possible move to Fribourg sometime after the new year. This website has been a great source of information to us.

Some miscellaneous info about my family... We are computer nerds, even the 3 year old, who will open up windows media player on any computer that has it installed, and start listening to your music collection. I read French well enough to understand it, however listening and speaking are going to be really fun, if one's idea of really fun is being a deaf person at a music concert... My husband works in IT for a company I like to call the mini evil empire and I'm a stay at home mom. And I'm also deeply in love with my Dyson vacuum cleaner. I've read that it's not a good idea to take this over to Switzerland but I'm wondering if anyone else has done this and used a large wattage transformer and had any luck.

-Gwen

Hello Emarie and welcome to the Forum. You'll find lots of useful info here, for sure. Good luck with your move.

I know nothing about vacuum cleaners.

Re: Moving from California to Fribourg

Its probably cheaper to by a Dyson over here rather than bother with a transformer.
Anyway you can't buy the bags for the US versions here.

By the way that last sentence was a joke.

Hi Gwen from this native Californian !

You,and your husband sound like you're both very smart and adventurous;as well as being blessed.

Enjoy, all the best;and many good times in Fribourg Gwen! (But,you two will be missing the Cali warm sunshine.)

This guitarist knows nothing about vacuum cleaners...

Tschüß Gwen,

Re: Moving from California to Fribourg

You'll need a fairly robust transformer for your vacuum cleaner. The regular radio shack type will probably go out on you pretty quickl. The transformers I've brought over from the 'states ranged in the $90-$120. And then you'll have to ship it in your container.

You'll need to store the transformer somewhere in the house.

You'll need unpack it every time you vacuum.

I think you're better off eBaying it, and getting a brand new one here.

Hey, how come I don't do that kind of thinking for my own dilemas?

Another one oldhand? I thought you apologized for the last one. Listen, holding grudges is bad for your health. Let it out all at once, then move on. I never carry mine around.

Used to live in S.F. Bay myself so welcome to a fellow Bay-er

Phos is exactly right. Don't bother with the transformers/ plug adaptors...Did it for years including appliances I picked up in UK/ Eire and it is a massive pain! The Switzerland seems to be a big market for Dyson, what with the passion for cleanliness and all, so all the shops are full of various models and you'll have no problem replacing it at a decent enough price.

Hey, California girl! Like, you need to get a life!

Why not hire someone to do your cleaning (very cheap labor in Switzerland) and use a daycare center one day per week, or whatever. That way, you can take some French lessons and the three year-old can bond with some Swiss kids! Cheers!

Re: Moving from California to Fribourg

Welcome to EF and your upcoming trip to CH.
I don't know about your love for the vacuum, we sell them here too.
Also living in Fribourg, I must say you could have some more lively cities to live in, but FR will do.
Dont waste your money on a transformer, which will more than likely cost a fair amount to run your vac. Buy another vac here, they are fairly cheap.

Re: Moving from California to Fribourg

There are often a special offer on Dysons at places such as Media Markt and Fust
Also for an idea of prices look at:

Just to let you know, we had our first snowfall today. Welcome to Fribourg.

Nick.

Are we living in the same Switzerland? Or is that some New Switzerland somewhere in the midwest?
