Considering a move

I have been offered a role in Switzerland with a compnay and they are requesting I relocate to Lausanne. Having worked in several other countries previously my wife and 3 kids are happy to locate but want to put down some roots, is Switzerland a good choice? I am being offered CHF 160,000 is this a decent salary as I undersatnd living in Switzerland is expensive. What would the equivalent UK salary be to CHF 160,000 to obtain a similar standard of living.

Re: Considering a move

Try using the search facility. This type of question has been asked, and answered, many times.

Everyone will have a different view on what the equivalent GBP salary is. For what it's worth my guess is that CHF 160,000 is broadly equivalent to around GBP 60-70,000. This assumes you put your kids in public school.

Re: Considering a move

We have moved recently from uk to switzerland with our three children on the same salary.
My thoughts are that it is definately enough if you dont want to put them through private schooling.
Food and general living is alot more expensive and although 160k sounds impressive at first it breaks down quite easily.
We still enjoy a fantastic life style and i know many people who came over here on the basis of it being a short term move who have now settled and wouldnt live anywhere else.
Best of luck to you! X

Re: Considering a move

Hi Thanks for all the info

As the two eldest kids are 13 and 16 we are considering putting them in a bi lingual school so we do not adversly impact on exams etc. The young one will be fine in a French speaking school as he is only 4.

We are considering Vevey to live, any oppinions. Interested to here any recomendations re places to live.

We are also considering the Haut Lac international school in Vevey, does anyone have any experiance of the school.

My wife is a class room assistant, how easy will it be for her to find work and will she need a work permit

We looked for something to just start us off, with the knowledge that we wouldnt really know where we wanted to be until we settled a little. Got a smaller plCe than originally wanted but to do us. And actually we like it now!
Seriously consider the expense of bilingual/ international! I would say if your employer is helping with school fees then its fine. But after paying out two lots of those fees you will probabaly be living a very basic lifestyle. Shopping costs 200-250chf a week for a family of 5 i have found just to give an idea. Rental will be 2000chf+
