Just moved to Zurich area & looking to Publish an online English Magazine

Dear All,
Myself, My wife & son, Have just recently relocated Kanton Zurich (Urban Turbenthal) ! We basically moved here because my wife took a position as a Fashion Design Director for a company in Zurich doing Corporate Fashion last year!
I myself come from a Fashion P.R , Media & Advertising background & after seeing how difficult it is to find an English Speaking Job in the sector & also the fact that my son does not have a place in our kindergrippe till mid September, I have come to the conclusion that perhaps I might be better of doing something on my own.
My Idea is to create a monthly well rounded Fashion & Lifestyle magazine for both Men & Women. When I say well rounded I mean that I would like the magazine to have a little bit of everything... Fashion, Lifestyle, Interior Design, Art, Food & Travel, Local & International News / Celebrity Gossip, Luxury goods & even perhaps a Financial News section as there are a lot of English speaking expats working in this field in here in Switzerland.
I would be interested to hear if anyone has any feedback.

Thanks & Warm Regards,
Paul Jovanov

I guess you tried walking around TMC and chatting to people? They seem to be up on the gossip about jobs in that industry.
Here is their web site (in German) http://www.tmc.ch/de/tmc/kontakt/

BTW, this web site has a lot of room for improvement :)

Zurich has a surprisingly vibrant art scene, they know the value of vintage as well, from clothes through to furnishing. I imagine there is a good market for a well positioned magazine.

All sounds good. Apart from Celebrity Gossip. Please, give us a break from that sort of junk (and I will say that the intelligent type Swiss who might be interested in your mag will agree with me)

Hi Paul. This sounds like an interesting pursuit. You should come by one of the Zurich entreprenuers meetup gatherings sometime. You'd find yourself in like company. I'd be interested in doing some fashion photography (have a couple summer projects in the works) so maybe there's a way for us to work together... Drop me a line: matt@MatthewAndersonPhoto.com

Haha. Note taken... maybe a 2 pager at the end of perhaps local events & openings!

Celebrity gossip seems less interesting to me as well. Why not a Swiss fashion magazine - with an emphasis on highlighting some of the small brands that pop up here and there. I can think of at least 3 or 4 which would be good candidates for articles.

Hi Paul,

Welcome to Switzerland. I think it's a great idea! If you need a content writer for fashion, lifestyle and gossips, I'm the one you need :) I'm a content manager/writer and make-up artist. I love fashion, I'm always aware of new trends and I'm a gossip addict!

Sarah.

Dear All,
I first want to say Thank you to everyone for there thoughts! This is exactly what I need to get a better idea of what you as reader would like to see in such a magazine as well as those who who like to contribute!

I want you all to know that I am not walking into this new venture blind. We are already off to a great start as i am very lucky to have a very good friend of mine helping me with this. My friend is & has been a chief editor for an global Printed & Online magazine for almost 14 years based in France! His magazine is of course of a different genre (it is the most successful & longest running magazine of its kind http://face-full.com/) however the concept of how it is built & runs stays the same.

I am looking for writers & contributors in all in most area's of the magazine & also for somebody who has experience here in Switzerland helping with the Advertising! For those of you that have that already have said you would like to contribute i will contact you within the next days;-)

I am thinking of making the content of the Magazine 60 % Swiss and the other 40 % International. However regarding Luxury goods try to focus more on Swiss Products (as I Know the Asian market is willing to spend alot on high quality Swiss goods)

To begin with the magazine would be available online also having an app however if successful after 2-3 years would look at going print!

Once again.. Thank You & please continue to give your thoughts.
Warm Regards,
Paul Jovanov

Dear Paul,

I think it's an amaizing idea to start something like an online English magazine. I am sure you will attract a lot of readers with it. I think it's a pitty that in general people in CH are not that fashion oriented as in other parts of the world. Maybe a magazine like this can make a difference, and for the expats here, who are missing that "sex and the city" and "gossip girl" vibe in Switzerland, I am sure they will welcome it with open arms! You can also make a little column and maybe book some space for the where and abouts. Best places to dine, Fashion must haves, ultimate bars and weekend getaways! And don't forget about some of the nice spa's this country has to offer! Just some ideas from my side!

wish you all the best and let us know when it's online!

Greetings Husin

Re: Just moved to Zurich area & looking to Publish an online English Magazine

It sounds like a great idea, I feel a title bit isolated here from the 'fashion' world and my only source of inspiration are the non Swiss paper magazines I buy. In fact my husband just offered to buy me an iPad and magazine subscriptions for Xmas... shortly after my SIL gave me some of her 'latest style magazines' i.e. Brigitta...

I think articles aimed at non Swiss giving a non swiss view would be great too. Not an anti-swiss view just a different perspective...
I have Swiss family and friends but to be honest when I have been told about 'cool' 'hip' 'trendy' places I am usually very disappointed... its all about perception..... Most recently I was told Kaufleuten was 'cool'. Seriously?!?!
But then they don't understand my excitement at finding small rustic fondue restaurants... so I guess we are just coming from different places....

best cocktail bars/best gourmet burger/best wine list/best fondue/best Italian/Best innovative desserts/best people watching would all be categories/lists I would like to read....

Introducing Swiss foods, wines etc, places to eat and weekend breaks from CH and within Switzerland Maybe readers even writing about the best things in their village/city in a travel blog kind of way... the possibilities are endless....

Hello Paul

Sounds like a great idea. If you'd like a contributor on the literature side, I write for a UK literary magazine under the name JJ Marsh. Words with JAM is both print and ezine. I've interviewed Christos Tsiolkas, JK Rowling, Judy Blume, Tracy Chevalier, Paulo Coelho, etc, etc.
I also co-produce The Woolf, a Zürich-based ezine for writers in Switzerland. I'm a journalist, teacher and author of a new Zürich-based crime novel.

Good luck and I'll look forward to reading.
