Moving to Basel

Hi

I'm Josie, and I'm moving to Basel at the beginning of September. I'm British and have been living in Frankfurt, Germany for the last 8 and a half years. I'm looking forward to it and exploring my new home, but at the same time, I'm also a little apprehensive, as this will be a big move for me.

I'm a bit on the quieter side, I love running, books, hiking and art, and I am a practicising Buddhist. I've already found a Buddhist centre in Basel, and a running club, so I'm happy about that :-)

This forum has been wonderful so far, some really great advice on here, and I'm sure you'll be seeing much more of me in the weeks/months to come ;-)

Josie

Hope you enjoy Basel, I moved here in October. Not to put a damper on your relo, but try not to forget about declaring your religion when you register. If you do, unless I'm mistaken, the church tax police will knock on your door

Re: Moving to Basel

Welcome in advance!

I'll also be arriving in Basel soon, I'll start work there at the beginning of September. I'm a Brit but have lived in Denmark for almost 6 years.

There seem to be a lot of newcomers at the moment - could be nice to organise a drink/other social event in early September so us new ones can meet some friendly faces

Re: Moving to Basel

Thanks very much for your messages. Yes, Debra, it would be nice to meet some other new people when we get here, let's do something about that :-)

With regards to the church tax: Here in Germany, I just wrote "none" on the form when they asked me for my religion and I have never paid church tax. I assume (hope) it's the same in Switzerland :-)

Hi Josie,

I just moved here. I am starting work this coming week. I am in the same boat as you and would be happy to meet up with you at some stage. I am Irish. Feel free to get in touch.

THere was a meetup opportunity at Pickwicks last night (posted by someone yesterday) . Keep an eye out here, and especially on the events page, for social happenings in Basel. They happen regularly.

Sounds like a plan. How does next weekend sound for meeting up? Will probably be exhausted all week after starting work tomorrow and getting to know everything new here a little more.

Ruairi

Re: Moving to Basel

Hello again.
I'd also be up for meeting next weekend - or even for a drink mid-week if anyone has the energy!

I also start work tomorrow and it might be nice to break the week up

Hey Debra,

I think we spoke by email a few days ago. Good luck with the new job.
I'm starting with Syngenta tomorrow. I might well be around mid-week for a drink.
I'm not sure what internet access I will have in the hostel I will be staying at from tomorrow onwards but I will check my mail within the next couple of days.

Talk soon,
Ruairi

You are not mistaken! moved here a year and a half ago and innocently declared my religion and lo and behold! a CHF 200.35 tax bill! I'm now told that I have to write a letter denouncing my religion if I want to get out of this one. Great advice!

I don't think you have too much too fear from the "Kirchensteuer" (church tax) police -- I believe church tax in BS is payable only by declared Protestants, Roman Catholics, Christian Catholics and Jews. For BL it's slightly different but I don't think Buddhism would attract church tax. However -- best to check first at the appropriate office!

Hi guys,

If you are on for a few beers this Saturday, write back and we can organise something somewhere.
