Working in Bern

Just wondering if anyone has/had a similar experience they can share...

I am planning to come and work in Bern however my son and wife will not be joining me initially for a couple of years. I'll be working in Bern during the week and I'll be going back to home over the weekends.

I am trying to anticipate the impact it will have on the taxes that we will have to pay in both Switzerland or UK and any benefits that we may or may not receive in Switzerland. Are there any other important points or issues that we should consider?

Does anyone know/have experience in this/know where I could find out?

Cheers,

Re: Working in Bern

Silly question maybe, but just to clarify, will you be getting paid by a swiss company in swiss francs?

One thing to consider if you are commuting back to London is an airline called Skywork who run flights from Bern/Belp to London City.

Thanks for a prompt response and yes I will be paid in swiss francs. I'll certainly consider skywork. How do they compare with Swissair?

Re: Working in Bern

Sounds like you could be considered as still being resident in the UK so you would still be liable for tax in the UK on your earnings in CH (though I could be talking nonsense). Depending on how lucrative your work will be over in Bern I would either suggest getting some professional advice (from a tax lawyer) or speaking to HMRC, alternatively has your company got anyone else in this situation - you could speak to their HR department.

In terms of benefits, forgive the probing, but what for if you are working and your family is still in the UK initially?

Skywork are a small regional airline running two engined turboprops, not really that similar to SWISS but I have flown with them a couple of times and have been quite impressed. Both City and Belp are quite small (esp. Belp) so check-in times are very low, price wise they (Skywork) CAN be expensive, but if you don't have a Halbtax card then by the time you have added on 100 CHF for return train travel to ZRH from Bern, the fares can be considered similar, and as is typical the earlier you book the better the price.

Of course if you want, you can always go with Queezyjet, but I find them to be something of a false economy considering where they fly from/to (and associated travel costs) and the add-ons.
