Looking to meet other English speakers in Lugano/Ticino

Time to start over again!

I've been here in Switzerland for a couple of years now and I can't complain - I've got a decent flat to live in and a job I enjoy. However, my social life at the moment is kind of depressing.

The few friends I had actually made here have either left Switzerland (most of them) or are now too busy with their own lives to keep in touch.

I have had very little success in making friends with the locals (polite interactions, yes, real friends, nope) - not to mention I am beginning to really miss the chance to make spontaneous jokes and cultural references that others actually understand.

Meeting English speakers about my age (30-36) would be terrific, especially if you have just arrived here, as I can prove of assistance by showing you around and sharing with you the practical knowledge I learnt the hard way after moving here (and can help with the local lingo too).

In fact, meeting anyone at all would be great.

Anyone interested?

hey man, I would be up for a beer, just that, without meaning to be a bitch ('scuse me ladies, no offense intended) i'm out of your age range... I know you're just trying to give an idea about yourself and not trying to cut people out, but maybe you're gonna have to be a bit more open minded about who you can make friends with and not worry to much about their age.

Hi Lofty! Personally I have nothing against it as long as you're a decent fella.

You're just making two misguided assumptions here.

I'm not trying to be a snob or ageist here. As I said, I would be happy to meet just anyone but especially people my age. I don't think there's anything wrong with a desire to connect with peers for a change. So far I've always found myself associating with people either a lot older than me or younger because as a rule I don't care about someone's age. But then, I've found myself often singled out because in the end it's a lot easier for them to share activities with their fellow students, their flatmates or their own family and children, their own co-workers, etc. Also, people a lot older than me tend to favour events and activities I frankly cannot afford.
So my reasoning is that maybe it's going to be a bit more natural with people in a similar situation as mine? Not ruling anyone out, would most welcome a diverse group, I'm just uneasy about joining a group in which I am the only one who doesn't fit in. Does it make any sense?

The second is assuming I am a man. But I consider that a compliment. (I'm not really into girly stuff, more the geeky/outdoorsy type, and definitely get along with blokes better than with chicks.)

Now, who's the one who should open their mind a bit? :P

makes sense, so your situation is (sorry if i put words in your mouth), expat, smart, early thirties, tomboy , speaks some italian, open and courageous enough to admit that you're having difficulties with getting a social life (for me the big hassle of Switzerland, of course not counting Swisscom, even in the italian-speaking side)

so far so good you sound like a nice person.

boh, the "hey man" didn't necessarily refer to your gender, but ok you got me, if you'd have asked me, I would have assumed you we're a bloke, I guess the "beer" gave that away.

I live in the centre of Lugano, we can grab a coffee in the day otherwise aperitivo. Did you find any places you like? Btw, I'm male, 38, in a relationship.

Hi Röschti,

Why not try the Internations group, www.internations.org ? They meet once a month in Lugano and are mostly your age. The mambership is now over a thousand strong with maybe 200 attending a meet up with perhaps 50 different nationalities represented! I am merely a member but I have met many interesting people through this organisation.

There is also the 'Meet up' group, http://www.meetup.com/Lugano-MeetUp/
which is smaller in numbers but just as useful.

Best of luck, anyway!

Good luck to you too! Luzern is a lovely town, have you met anyone there yet?

@ Ebeneezer & SPB:
Thanks for the advice! I discovered meetup a couple of months ago, but haven't had an opportunity to take part in any of the meetings they've organised so far. I'll see if there's anything coming up soon.

Hi Röschti

I don't know if your social life has improved so much you're too busy for newcomers now or not but I moved to Lugano from the UK beginning of September so could probably use some advice from someone who's been through it and settled in here. And I could definitely use getting to know some more people and getting my social life kick started if you or anyone else fancies meeting up?

Hi, I've just moved to Lugano at the start of September too. Did you all meet up yet? If not can I invite myself along? Would be nice to meet some people outside of work.

I'm always around, but as Roesti and Lofty know, I'm somewhat older!

Lofty, when did you move downtown? Your visit for New Years is still a topic of conversation (Kevin was by tonight).

They also think I'm old, Tom! As we know it's all in the mind, any news on your friend's new pub, or still secret? Been down since May, it would be civilised, except the bike paths aren't fixed yet, i heard the planner forgot until the day before the plan was due (really!). Anyone know how to get to Paradiso, i got lost the other day?

If you are an outdoorsy type, you could try setting up or joining an event on the forum events page?

Certainly for me, I got to know quite a few people by joining in sunday 5 a side football games.

Re: Looking to meet other English speakers in Lugano/Ticino

@Lofti and Tom - A beer would be great! I'm meeting Waterfall in a couple of weeks hopefully so could do then or pretty much anytime is good for me so just let me know when and where suits you. I haven't really figured out the bars here yet so would be good if you suggest somewhere you reckon is decent. I'm 37 so not exactly a spring chicken anymore either! Although my brain seems to still think it's 25 at most.

@krlock3 Thanks, I haven't been to the events pages here so I'll go take a look.

Will
