Hello All!

Hiya Guys,

just thought I'd drop in here and introduce myself, I'm Female 31 years of age, , two kids age nearly 9 and 7 and live about 10 mins from ZH. I've been living in switzerland for the last 10 years, before that I lived in germany but originally from the north part of the UK (Manchester)!

Yeah I'm absolutely homesick to go back home, but this time I want to move to the Midlands as my other half is there, yeah I know some of you may say I would be crazy to move back to the UK but its just simply my home.

Well nuff said for now, I'm really looking forward to your responses and hopefully enjoy getting loads of information and possibly friends

Greetings Ginger

Re: Hello All!

Hello!
I know how you feel, I haven't live in the UK since 1998, this is our 3rd foreign country, but lately I'm seriously considering returning (again everyone says its a bad idea, not the right time........) I also come from near to Manchester, and until the last few years never wanted to go back, in fact a couple of weeks over there every summer and I couldn't wait to leave again!! I think you are right in that it may not be the best place in the world to go live right now, but Switzerland however long we live here will never feel like home. This is the only country that has made me consider the merits of returning to the UK!! However Switzerland also has a lot of positives, and that is why the decision is very hard to make.

Re: Hello All!

Hiya Rachel,

I know exactly how you feel! When I lived in germany I didn't get that huge urge to go home as I have now! I think it also has to do that I'm missing my man loads ;( Well of courseI miss my familyin the UK to!

Your originally from near Manchester? I used to live about 10 mins car drive from Oldham. So I guess you have that proper northern dialect eh? I still have got a strong broad northern dialect and haven't lived in the UK since I was 8 years old, if you heard me you'd think I was a tourist over lol, but I speak swiss german like a native so yeah maybe not haha!

And I totally agree that switzerland is excellent life quality!!! The schools here are brill and much much better than the dumps I used to go to in the UK *uuugh* I only have to think of the school dinners and I want to puke lmao

Re: Hello All!

Hi Ginger

I'm originally from the West Midlands, I grew up on a farm and the countryside is just gorgeous. Definitely stay away from living in Birmingham but a great place for shopping and clubbing! Try Shrewbury or Stratford upon Avon.
I've only been in Switzerland since April, it's definitely hard work building a new life!

Best of luck

Rachael

Re: Hello All!

Hi Ginger
Yes I still have the northern accent although not as strong as the Oldham one! I actually grew up near Macclesfield/Stockport, so not quite Manchester, but it's the nearest city. Talking to foreigners a lot I get used to using Manchester as most people have heard of it!! My other half is actually from a town about 10 mins drive from Oldham - are you from Ashton?
I agree about the schools, my youngest is about to go to 1st class and she loves the swiss school. All the horror stories you hear about English schools and how the kids aren't allowed to do this and that because of health and safety etc.... I'm almost happy that swiss kindergarten light fires with matches, climb trees and play with knives!! And you're right about school dinners - ours were so bad I used to take sandwiches from home most of the time! I don't speak swiss-german very much at all - I know some from daughter's Kindergarten and son's football club, but struggle with it most of the time - that's probably a reason I think going back to England would be good! I can manage high german better, but I miss being able to speak without thinking - although some people might say that is a help to me being a blunt northerner!!
I'm off back to england soon so maybe that will cure me of notions to go back if I try hard enough to see the disadvantages of living there again full time and not just popping in for a week or so. The kids are looking forward to going, crumpets, sausage rolls, gingerbread men, harry ramsden's (unless it's shut down already), shopping at the Trafford Centre and a tour round Old Trafford again with a chance to buy the new shirts....... happy days!!

Re: Hello All!

Hey Rach,

your from the Midlands? Well I was looking at some places there and where to avoid haha! Sparkhill, Centre Brumm, Ladywood certainly not!! Edgebaston or Erdington sounds nice or Solihull but thats quite expensive (only for snobs I guess)

I think straton would be to far from where my hunny works so we will have to look at alternative places. Hope to hear from you soon

Re: Hello All!

Hi Ginger and welcome!
I'm from the North of Manchester and I am ginger! (hair ). I've lived here in Switzerland for five years and still have my Lancashire accent, don't think I'll ever lose it.
I've no desire to go back to the UK, me and hubby are very happy here, I don't blame you for wanting to be with your partner though, before I moved out here, my husband had been working here for eight years and it was very difficult at times.
Anyway, enjoy the forum and good luck with everything!

Hello

Yes I'm from the midlands but the last 15 years I lived in Brighton and London (happy days) before I moved to the cheese land.
Ok so I may have been a little harsh when I said don't live in Birmingham, there are nice places such as Moseley, Harbourne and certain parts of Edgbaston. Soilihull is nice too but more of a commute into the centre.
Good luck in your search Birmingham is a big place!

Rachael

Re: Hello All!

Hi and welcome to EF. You should have got in touch a long time ago- and maybe you wouldn't be so homesick

As a native Swiss, I lived in the Midlands for a very very long time but further South. First in Newcastle-u-Lyme then in Leicestershire. I get really cross when people mock and put down the Midlands, because parts are very beautiful, and people are very friendly. Give me East Leics and Rutland over the chintzy Cotswolds full of tatty souvenir shops and chichi tea shops.

Now back in my native Jura mountains (NE) for retirement with my Brit OH - again, often maligned, not touristy, but just wonderful.

Hope you get to be with your BF soon - life's too short. Bonne chance.
