Hi Everyone! Irish recently moved to Basel

Hi there all!

I just moved here to Basel about a week ago and have been having a bit of a lonely time- it's awful hard to make friends of my own age here!
Well, a bit about me?...oh go on then!
My name is Christine, I am from Northern Ireland, am 21 years old and just started working here after graduating uni in England.
This seems like a friendly place to find people so if anybody wants to talk to a fun-loving, talkative Irish girl then I'd love to make a few friends!!

Have you been to the Irish bar in Basel - very friendly atmosphere and esy enough to strike up a conversation with other young people.

What are your interests ? There are lots of clubs and groups to join for all sorts of things, which would give you an instant group of people to become friends with. Let use know and we may be able to make specific suggestions.

Re: Hi Everyone! Irish recently moved to Basel

Thanks for the welcome, everyone!
The craic has well and truly been brought with me, I'm afraid it's part of the package!

I've been trying to get up the courage to go to the Irish pub, actually. Thinking of stopping in it this week some evening! Want to get in with a good crowd before rugby season really kicks off!

I like reading, writing, music, sports and films so pretty wide range of interests, hopefully there should be something that would suit me!!

Welcome to Basel! Best thing to do is just show up to some events that people post and everyone is really friendly. I'll be back for a year in 2 weeks and I found it to be a great way to meet new faces.

Re: Hi Everyone! Irish recently moved to Basel

If you are into running at all, join the Basel Dragons Running club - it caters for all levels, from purely social joggers to serious athlltes, but also has a good number of social events ( there is a bar at the clubrooms.) It's an international, English speaking group. They meet 2-3 times a week. www.baselrunning.ch

Or the very social Basel Hash House Harirers (the drinking club with a running problem.) http://basel.harrier.eu.org/

Trekking - good way to see Switzerland: sign up to the Zurich trekking group through the www.meetup.com site. All ages and nationalities, with various walks happening every weekend anywhere in Switzerland.

Book clubs: watch the events calender on this site.

Check the Meetup site for other interests, including the BASS page, which is a Basel based group that has a variety of things to do.

Wow thanks for all the help, Biff, you should have a job doing this! Or maybe you do...?

I'll certainly look into a few of those options, I'm bound to meet some people soon!

Thanks!

Nope. Just mentioning some of the things I have used, or are aware of. Kayaking? How about kayaking? Dragonboating?

Ok, so your biggest problem is going to be: Paddy's or Mr Pickwick's? This is kinda like the Gryffindor/Slytherin dichotomy that the Sorting Hat presented to Harry Potter. ("You could do great things in Mr Pickwick's...")

Re: Hi Everyone! Irish recently moved to Basel

And having been no help at all in my previous post, I'm sure the Basel EF members have a regular meetup (wasn't it in ZicZac last time? Dunno, I wasn't around anyway). Problem is, though, that most expats are really old, so it's gonna be like going out with friends of your parents.

I made Swiss friends of my age when I first came here through my job. What do you do?
