Soon to be in Geneva/ Lausanne area

Hi EnglishForum,

came across the forum during my search (still ongoing) for a new challenge in Switzerland. Read some threads and this truly seems to be a great place, so I had to sign up :-)
We are a German couple and my wife will start working near Lausanne in September.
I have taken the leap and decided to not commute from Germany, but also try and find something in the Lausanne/ Geneva area.. let's see how things develop.

Look forward to meeting interesting and nice people here

Re: Soon to be in Geneva/ Lausanne area

hi, a great area but quite different from Germany. Try and get accommodation sorted asap, it's not an easy task. The commute from Geneva to Lausanne can be quite trying also.

Re: Soon to be in Geneva/ Lausanne area

Hi Dack
thanks for your reply, much appreciated.
Already found out about the housing issue .... price-value compared to most places in Germany (except Munich/ Frankfurt) seems to be out of whack in Geneva area ;-)
Which way is traffic going? I would assume in the morning its going from Lausanne into Geneva and then in the evening out of Geneva? right?
thx

I think the traffic is going both ways.

Are you planning on living in Geneva and working in Lausanne?

Re: Soon to be in Geneva/ Lausanne area

Hi Katrin
planning on living in Lausanne and potentially commuting to Geneva (via car/ train). Wife works in Vevey, therefore trying to find something "in the middle" that is still a "city" :-)

That makes more sense!

If you would work close to the train station taking the train is a piece of cake! (or even if you don't work that close to the train station)

I would check out Morges, it takes approximately the same time to go Morges - Geneva vs Morges - Vevey (according to sbb.ch)

It has a McDonalds (last time I checked) does that count as city?

Re: Soon to be in Geneva/ Lausanne area

Hi Katrin,
thanks for the hint on Morges, much appreciated
Good old McD does not count as a city, even my hometown has one nowadays... city usually starts above 250k inhabitants, but I guess I have to make some exceptions in lovely Switzerland :-)

well, it can be done but just be aware that traffic and housing are problems in this beautiful part of the world. It really depends on your budget. With enough cash, you'll certainly find a place that's right.

Morges - Geneva is not necessarily much easier than Lausanne - Geneva as there is a Lausanne - Geneva non stop train which will do the journey in the same time. I would focus first on Lausanne and see if you can get something within your budget, else go for something nearer Vevey and drive to Geneva.

Re: Soon to be in Geneva/ Lausanne area

Thx Dack appreciate your recommendations.
Actually we prefer living in a city with everything it has to offer.. bars, restaurants, sports, culture..
Prices for apartment rental are ridiculous...but that's the way it is in most nice places in weatern europe..budget is 4k max/ month. let's see
