Its alllllllll me baby :)

Hello All

Ive been a member of the Forum for a couple years now, Ive been activly posting for the last few months but its just dawned on my i never actually introduced myself!

As the pic may suggest i am from Ireland but have been living in Basel for the past (nearly) 7 years.

I desperately wanted to leave Ireland, my original thought was to move to the UK but i realised that the UK is too close as i could easily "pop" home for the weekend. My boyfriend (now my husband) was working in Basel and asked me to join him. After many long conversations i eventually said yes and moved!

The first couple years here were a breeze (i had intended to move only for one year). I enjoyed living in a different country, meeting new people, seeing new places etc. The next few years after that wernt so easy. At the time i didnt have a "good" job, the language barrier was more apparent, lack of family, long term friends etc..

Thankfully, things have improved alot, I finally getting my Ass in gear and "properly" mentally moved here. . .as in not just thinking its a long vacation.

I never realised how traumatic moving can be but it is! Hope you guys managed to settle in with out too much difficulty

So 7 years later, here i am, in work, on lunch, introducing myself to you guys

Dont know if thats a proper introduction but sure itl do for now

A formal welcome "Home" to you!

I started out in a village in the Odenwald, working at a satellite tracking station, just for a year or two, you know hardly worth learning a third language.

Then I learnt "Ein Bier bitteschön" and 30 minutes later "Noch ein Bier bitte" and so it went on. It took about 10 years to learn it was "Ein helles Bier" but correctly the plural dropped an 'S' in "Zwei helle Bier"

Now 25 years later I often wished I had learnt German grammar properly at the very beginning!

Yes, i think the ability to communicate is key!

Its great so many people speak English but the ability to simply ask and understand directions is well.. amazing

My German is OK but am quite keen to improve on it so fingers are crossed work will send me on a course.

In the mean time, good old Iphone.. theres an app for that LOL and my collegues are quite good for speaking slowly but of course they quite nicely check first if its ok they speak in german

Should really learn french seeing as i live just over the border but i am so much more interested in German

first thing to learn... it's not all about you.

this is a community of many different voices and you have to learn to listen and accept.
