New Family at Schaffhausen

Hello Everybody,

Me and my family ( wife and baby girl 16m old) are thinking about moving from Barcelona to Schaffhausen, because I received a job offer. (100K CHF).

Can you help me to figure out about living expenses? flat renting, insurances, etc.... thanks!

and... My wife doesn't speak german, but we are planning to take some german courses...What about baby care? Is it expensive over there?

Thanks a lot for your help and support!!! Adeu!

Arturo

Re: New Family at Schaffhausen

This one is not so easy to answer as saying you need say, 120k.

Schaffhausen is a small town/kanton bordering Germany, with many nice apartments that are not too expensive compared to the rest of Switzerland. Taxes are generally higher there. But, you can also save a lot by going to Germany to shop.

Schaffhausen is a nice area. 100k should be enough for a normal life. Really depending on the standard required. Finding an apartment is always challenging in Switzerland... so start ASAP.

Re: New Family at Schaffhausen

I would say the opposite. I would highly recommend central. Being a border town, it lacks xenophobic locals. Historically the first stop in Switzerland for many. Rents are cheaper that the rest of Switzerland. Don't worry about an old house and 2 flights of stairs with a baby. It can be a fantastic fairy tale lifestyle. There will be somewhere for the buggy downstairs/outside, no one will pinch it. Walking everywhere will save a fortune. I moved to Baden, dead centre, 2 kids, one 6 months old, 2nd floor, nowhere for the buggy, tiny stone spiral staircase. The place had been on homegate, empty for ages.
