Hello!

Hello all,

My husband expects to be transferred to Rolle from the US in the next couple of months, and if all goes well, I would move with our two children in late December / early January. I'm currently working in a relatively high-stress professional position, and have to admit I'm looking forward to being a SAHM for awhile!

I'm from the US, previously with dual US/Swedish citizenship, have family in Germany, and spent much of my older childhood in the Middle East. I've studied several languages but haven't had the chance to use them very often, so they've gotten awfully rusty - but I'm hoping to revive my French and German soon! My husband is from the Netherlands, but has lived most of his life in the US. He also has plenty of family in the Netherlands as well. Still speaks Dutch every day with his own family, but even though I did decide to study Dutch after we got married so many years ago, we keep forgetting to use it at home - except when we're with the kids and don't want them to know what we're talking about

Our kids are in 4th and 7th grade, don't speak anything other than English, which has been bothering the heck out of my husband and I for years. For some unfathomable reason our school district doesn't find it necessary to start teaching foreign languages until high school. A bit late, if you ask me. My daughter recently decided that she really wanted to learn French. Conveniently enough, this position came up in Rolle shortly afterwards...

I've already spent a chunk of time perusing the forum, and am impressed with the amount of great information you're all willing to share. I hope I can contribute as well, once we arrive!

Re: Hello!

Hi shouldbesleeping (me too!),

Welcome to English Forum, and good luck with your move.
I agree, learning a foreign language is so important, we have the same problem with schools in the UK, I wish I had started to learn French and German at a young age.
Maybe you could teach your children as much French as you can before your move, after that, I'm sure they will pick it up and soon be talking like the locals.

Look forward to your future input here on EF!

Hello Shouldbesleeping,
Nice intro! Welcome to the Forum - I hope things go well for you all.
I`m sure your children are going to be just fine with the languages.
Cheers!
