This Swiss/Canadian is Missing Home...

Hi,

I'm new posting, but having been reading up for some time. I currently live in Canada, and was born here, but I did live in Switzerland (Kt. Bern) for 10 years growing up.

My mom married a Swiss man, we both became Swiss, and after I finished school and my apprentice she sent me back to Canada to get my university degree.

I would now like to come home... and yes, I totally feel like Switzerland is home.

Maybe it would help to take a little trip to Calgary and on to Banff...the mountains might help it feel a little more like home to tide you over. When is your next trip back to Switzerland?

I feel the same as you, but in reverse, itchy to get back to Canada!

Me too, and I don't have a drop of Swiss blood in my veins!

Welcome to EF and I hope you find a way to come home again.

lol.. oddly enough I've never been west of Ontario. It's really horrible. I would love to visit the West Coast.

I hope to be moving back to Switzerland over the next 6 months... that is if I get everything worked out and keep up the courage.

Do you come back to Canada often?

I've only been back to Canada once in the last 22 months. And I definitely waited too long. I got too worried about financial cost and forgot to factor in emotional costs when making the decision about timing.

I heartily recommend heading west. The rockies are incredible and BC is so beautiful too...plus if you are leaving in 6 months you need to make the most of your proximity and see as much as you can!

How long have you been in Canada now?

Re: This Swiss/Canadian is Missing Home...

I will definately try to visit... I've been told Banff is amazing around this time.

I actually grew up in Canada, but moved to Switzerland when I was 10. I lived there for about ten years and then back to Canada for University.

It's now been just over 10 years and I really really miss Switzerland. I used to go back 2-3 times a year while I was in school, but work doesn't allow that. So I'm down to one every 2-3 years.

Don't feel bad... I've lived in Canada my whole life and never been West of Ontario That being said... I've probably seen more of Germany than most Germans and more of Swizerland than most Swiss

Re: This Swiss/Canadian is Missing Home...

I'm kinda the same. I've never been east of Winnipeg - guess that's what happens when you live in such a massive country!

Banff is nice, but touristy. If you have the chance check out Canmore which is only a half hour away but much more charming, or head up a bit more north to Jasper...

I can see why a trip to Switzerland every 2 or 3 years doesn't feel like enough, that's a long time to be away. I'm curious what you would think of it as an adult...

Everytime I return to Switzerland it takes me a few weeks to get "reacquainted" with life there. And of course... by the time I get back into it, it's time for me to return to Canada.
