ciao has no particular reputation at present
function level at Novartis

Dear everyone,

Hello

I'm new to English forum.

I found lots of very useful information and hope to get some information about Novartis in Basel.

I am living in US and possibly move to Basel in late July.

Could you explain to me about function levels? How wide and how to move up from one function level to the next level?

I'm asking because I was offered for a job and the salary isn't as high as I expected but I was told the function level was pretty high..

Thank you so much in advance.

JK.

Re: function level at Novartis

Hello,

They should send you documentation regarding the levels.

Regarding promotions... well, that's the golden question isn't it? They work the same way here generally as anywhere else as to the opportunity, but you go up a level, with an associated pay grade + benefits.

Every year there is a small increase in salary to take account of inflation, so broadly speaking, your role doesn't matter, it's your level where the indexing comes in.

No idea how high they go, early 20's at a guess.

Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions. Mind you, if you move here in July (as I've just noticed), the decision has already been taken and presumably you know all the rest.

Ah well, anyway....

cheers

Re: function level at Novartis

It can change slightly depending on the Business Unit, Division and country but generally speaking:

Level 7 to Level 9 = PM's, Analysts, Jr Managers and Manager
Level 10 = Sr. Manager (Sr. PM's etc..)
Level 11 = Associate Director
Level 12 to Level 15 = Executive Directors
Level 15 and up = VP's, Sr. VP's, Board Executives

I never understood this. Just the other day, I saw a job spec for Novartis with Level 27.

Also, does anyone know the system with 'bands' are they salary related or position related? e.g. band "B4". I'm not even sure where to find my band and function level information...

Salary bands are related to functional level, and there is overlap in the bands. Your functional level should be mentioned in your contract.

As others have pointed out, there are 14 functional levels in Basel. 1-10 are non-management level (who track their hours); 11-14 are management level (do not track hours). There are levels above 14, but these refer to executive management.

Titles in Switzerland are inconsistent, but in the US they track more closely to functional level:

11: Associate Director
12: Director
13: Executive Director
14: Vice President

Thanks. Do you know where you can get a list of the bands and the order/range/scale?

I'd have though that salary bands are probably considered confidential.

Re: function level at Novartis

You should be good friends with someone in HR to get that info. It is not information that is shared widely. Based on my observations:

1) If you join a particular level from outside, the maximum that you will get paid is in the mid or 60 percentile range of the Band (based on how hard you negotiate)

2) If you stay long enough at the same level you will reach the higher end of the band based on Cost of inflation corrections (this takes years to achieve). If you reach the band maximum they will openly tell you that you do not qualify for an automatic pay increase because you are already at the max base pay level.

3) If you internally get promoted from one level to another higher level you will be within the initial 25% - 30% range of the Salary band.

Again, these are my observations based on what I've seen and some confidential conversations with certain friendly people in HR.

You can tell what band you're in by the length of the blade of the knife they gave you. Where in the band depends on how you slash the people around you, and to get promoted you have to stab everyone else in your band in the back.

I think that's all in the Novartis HR handbook.
