Elizabeth from Chicago

Who would've thought I could find a place colder than Chicago? Yet, here I am. I'm a 44-year old professional woman working for an international nonprofit here in Zurich. I'm here on my own - no spouse or kids - and am interested in meeting others, especially for going to see music. I play the fiddle and do some singing and would love to meet other folk/old-time musicians. If you have suggestions of where to find Irish, bluegrass or folk sessions, bring 'em on!

Re: Elizabeth from Chicago

Welcome to the forum!

I'm from the Midwestern US, and I think Chicago winters are (usually) much colder than Zurich winters. At least there isn't so much wind here. I think it snows less here, too. Give it some time, you'll see.

Re: Elizabeth from Chicago

Welcome to the gang.

You wouldn't believe it, we have Internet here in Switzerland, so we know it has been much colder in the Windy City for weeks, "much" meaning 12 - 20°F. And my OH in Michigan is snowed in, couldn't get out of her driveway for days. Maybe that's why she's flying to Switzerland next week....

Anyway, good luck with your settling in and your music quest.

Re: Elizabeth from Chicago

Welcome Eli - what a lucky lady you are to have lived in Chicago! I had the good fortune to spend 6 months there several years ago. It must be one of the most fantastic cities in the world.

Enjoy your time in Switzerland!

Re: Elizabeth from Chicago

Thanks for the tip on the bar. And for Merrylegs, yes, Chicago is fantastic! Spent 16 great years there, but am ready for a change of pace. Chicago could learn something from Zurich about how to organize public transit!

A place colder than whatever ? Take the S-7 and go to the "Opfikon Station" in Glattbrugg, which particularily in winter clearly is the coldest place outside Siberia

Hi, I just ran across your intro post from back in September.

Did you ever find a fiddle/folk session around Zurich? I'm interested in that music too.

Hi Andrea, I did connect with a few old-time musicians and will PM you. Also, I stopped in at McGees (as suggested below) and found that they have an Irish band once a month and an open mic series once a month. If you "like" them on their Facebook page it will keep you informed of shows.

Re: Elizabeth from Chicago

Welcome to Switzerland Eli.

I also love old folk, bluegrass, Irish music. UnfortunatelyI do not play an instrument as yet nor can I carry a tune

There is a concert tomorrow night, Mark Geary Christmas Tour, 18th December at Kafi für Dich,Stauffacherstrasse 141, Zürich.

Just buy the ticket at the door. He is a talented Irishmusician and you may like him.

I just send you a PM with more info
