Welcome to the forum! I have a couple of young interns in my lab at the moment, including a dutch one. Maybe they'd be happy to meet up. Send me a PM if you're interested & I'll give you their contact details.

Welcome to Grand-Genève

Okay you are in St-Cergues (Voirons) in France voisine of Geneva. At first I read St-Cergue (no s) which is in Switzerland, canton Vaud (Jura mountains), 1 hour from Geneva.

You need to go to downtown Geneva. Annemasse sucks!

Public transportation is very limited in your area. Nothing has improved since 1990 when I had to go there by bus. I hated life once I arrived there .

Solution 1: walk to Swiss border crossing of Moniaz (commune de Jussy) (it's very close) and take bus C, direction: P+R Sous-Moulin, get out at Graveson bus stop and take Tram 12 to downtown Geneva.

Solution 2: call 045 0844 678 at least 2 hours in advance and order the Proxi'TAC shuttle that will drop you off at ZI de Montréal or Prés des Plans bus stop in
Ville-la-Grand. From there take Bus 2 (Mon-Sat) or Bus DA (Sunday) to Swiss border (no need to change bus in Annemasse). Once at Swiss border (cross border by foot) take Tram 12 to downtown Geneva.

Re: New in Geneva area and want to make new friends

Hi Robine,
you are not in the right place to reach Genève easily.
It takes time and patience ! It would take 1 hour, 1 hour:20 to get there.
From Saint Cergue you can take the train to Nyon (where I live, and, by the way, the small train passes near me), then take the train to Genève.
Saint Cergue is a nice place if you want to sky !
Let me know if you need some help.
Bye
Teodoro

Re: New in Geneva area and want to make new friends

Hi Teodoro!

Yea it is not easy..
I have not found a trainstop in or near Saint-Cergues.. I am actualy going to ski for the first time this weekend! I am so excited to do that! I once went 'rodelen' I dont know how you say that in english, but you go up a snowy montain and you go down with a slee, and it was AWESOME!
I am getting of topic, sorry...
Is Nyon a fun city?

groetjes (as we say it in Holland)
Robin

Re: New in Geneva area and want to make new friends

Hi Robine,
I guess I was wrong. As far as I know Saint Cergue is not so complicated: the main point is that there are not so many trains from there to Nyon (on the contrary from Nyon to Genève is very easy).
I risked to go to live in Saint Cergue too. I work in Nyon and I had some difficulties to find a flat here, so I considered Saint Cergue a possible alternative (a colleague of mine stayed there for more than a year: by car it's easier).
Then, finally I have found a flat in Nyon (8 minutes walking from the office )
It's OK for me, because prices in Genève are too high !
I love Genève since I was there for 5 years during my Ph.D. time, but I don't complain so much living in Nyon since it takes only 20 minutes by car to get there (downtown).
To answer you: no, as far as I understand, Nyon is not a fun city. I'm still discovering it. Genève is much better, but remember: you are in Switzerland ! stores closes at 6PM ...
Life in Amsterdam is a lot different !

Re: New in Geneva area and want to make new friends

I don't know. I'm new in the forum.
I'm here because I was searching something else.
I answered to you because I can feel how can be your life in a "strange" place like Switzerland (it's a nice and easy place, but you have to adapt to a lot o things). Many years ago it was the same for me.
After 5 years here it was difficult to me to accept the life in Italy.
Two weeks ago, walking near the lake I felt at home (again).

Re: New in Geneva area and want to make new friends

Teodoro,

I know there is a Saint-Cergue and a Saint-CergueS with an S. So I think they are diffrent. It is a bit weird being in such a diffrent area, but i like it thoug! So you have quite a traveling history!
It is nice to hear you feel home! It is indeed very diffrent from Amsterdam. I grew up in a small town in the north, wich also was very diffrent from amsterdam! I also have been for several months in Paris, but i much more prefer it here
Just need to get used to the not that easy way of traveling..

Oh ! my god ! what a mistake !
I have misunderstood Saint-Cergue (Switzerland) with Saint-Cergues (France, Google Maps: 46.239512,6.322433). You are really far from there !
I hoped I could help you.

Re: New in Geneva area and want to make new friends

Laughing.
I can see St-Cergue from my window now.. But St-Cergues I'll need my telescope!

As for fun in Nyon.. I believe that Friday night is young persons night, 18-30 and Saturday is for the more 'mature' crowd. This is a well known but un-written rule. Being in the more mature category I can't comment on how good/bad Friday night is but places like cactus jacks looks completely full and jumping with youngsters. Or the fishermans for the 'expat' crowd.

Being a little older than 19, there are a few places I haven't explored yet, just looked in the window

Place a little advert in the cafeteria of the International School of Geneva, lots of Dutch families who, I'm sure, would be too happy to take you under their wings, if you are feeling homesick.
