Relocating to Geneva from California

Bonjour tout le monde,

I have lived in the US for a little over 30 years and now reside in California. I'm a french/US citizen but i spent almost all my life in the US (NY and CA) and now would like to move back to Europe as we've had it here in the US (my wife and her family are from Haute Savoie and my folks are in Paris). I get the impression that the IT/software market is very active in Switzerland and we'd like to head for Geneva (we are both french/english fluent) where the quality of life is excellent.

Am I being naive thinking I can get work there easily? I have 20 years experience in software design and development, architecture etc...mostly C#/.NET at this point (Microsoft technology stack). I had a phone interview with one company last week (I was in Annecy at the time) but they wanted me to start within days, and it takes more time than that to setup a trans-continental move.

Should I expect (even ask for) relocation for such a large distance?

Would appreciate any insight!
Merci

absolutely. If they want you, they will pay. If you want to work for them, be prepared to pay for yourself......that's the game.....

Usually they will assist with relocation costs.

And do you agree that IT market is very hot right now overthere? If so, why particularly in CH more than other European countries you think?

Google have a big office here - you'll have to ask a googler as to why... As for other IT companies I don't know - probably because its central and I'd imagine cheaper than say London - or it may just be that they enjoy the skiing

Jonathan,

"hot" is a VERY relative word.... hot in comparison to what? to Palo Alto? Walldorf? no, not even close. Compared to Ukiah, absolutely.

Is there in general a shortage of IT people? yes.

HQ's are based in Switzerland for tax purposes, a very distant second reason is because they can get executives to move here from just about anywhere (not the same for London, Germany or Paris).

IMHO it is not a hotbed for IT development in any sense of the word if you think about vendors (Google in Zurich is an exception, (but Google is always an exception). However there are plenty of non IT industry companies who need people for their internal IT departments.

Re: Relocating to Geneva from California

Ok thanks to all who chimed in. I've been trying to connect with tech blogs in the Geneva area, and posting/reading on all and anything i can find on Geneva from a tech/software perspective. So far I believe jobup.ch has been the most productive in terms of job finding.

Clearly there are tax reasons for being in CH no matter what business it is. It also seems to me CH is the only country with Germany to be doing .NET work, all the others seem to have gone the open source (LAMP) way.
I wish I could find some sort of .NET user group though.

It's dead pretty much everywhere in the US at the moment BTW. Palo Alto isnt what it used to be. The country is sinking fast. I believe UK is #1 now.
