Hello, possibly moving to Switzerland next spring (2015)

Hi, my name is Louise and my husband might get a job transfer to Baden for a year, possibly two. We are excited. We are visiting the area this week and find it beautiful, the people nice, and the weather fine, so far.

I am looking forward to meeting and chatting with the members of this forum and have already gleaned a lot of useful information from it just by following many of the threads, particularly the ones about where to rent, Baden or surrounding areas. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Louise

Thank you both. I spent the last hour or so reading threads on everything from pet requirements to used furniture. It does worry me to have read that people have been here for years and have not learned the language well enough. I fear my old brain will let me down on this one.

Have no fear. It is less about the brain and more about the motivation to learn the language and having the time to attend classes.

In many cases language courses are offered to the person the company is hiring, and not the spouse. Some companies offer both partners.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your stay here. The weather is going to get better.

Re: Hello, possibly moving to Switzerland next spring (2015)

Welcome. I also suggest getting hold of a copy of "Living and Working in Switzerland" by David Hampshire. It's full of useful info for both before and after you move. You can order from your local bookshop or via the Internet.

Start learning some German straightaway, even a little helps and you'll certainly need it to decipher all the food names, etc.

Check too on the IRS website about your US tax filing obligations so you know what you need to do to stay compliant.

Welcome!

I agree with the others, read lots of books - I enjoyed "Swiss Watching, the land of Milk and Money" in addition to the ones suggested.

Down load some German apps and speak only German with your family - Meaning articles (furniture, numbers, foods, etc) as you learn the new words.

Good luck.

I see you are a native Spanish speaker, where are coming from? We are from TX

Welcome to the forum :-) I can say that Baden is a beautiful town, and there are some gorgeous surrounding areas. I live about 10 minutes from Baden, and I absolutely love it here. Good luck in your search :-)

Re: Hello, possibly moving to Switzerland next spring (2015)

Thank you all for the great advice and book recommendations. And I might even meet some of you Wednesday night at Mr. Pickwick's Pub where I see from the calendar a group meets once a month.

Have written myself a reminder for the meetup on Wednesday - hopefully I will be able to make it this month for the first time. :-)
