Just landed - female Brit

Hi, I've been here a week. It's hard settling into my new home, new job and new City & surroundings. I'm more homesick than ever I've even spent a ridiculous amount of money on a flight home for Easter before I fall sick! Looking to make friends and see Basel and just socialise, laugh and smile
Anyone in a similar position?

Give yourself time, it is only 2 weeks after all. Everything's going to be strange and peculiar for a little while. Have a look down in the Events section of the forum to see what might be happening in Basel that you could go along to and meet up with other folk. :)

You are not going to feel at home and settled in a week, heck, I don't feel 100% at home after 3 years continuous and 6 in total

Just be sure to avoid anyone calling themselves Adrian and claiming to come from London.

Why what's all that about?

Basel is interesting for the number of magnuminous exhibits and interesting spectaculars. In particular, there is the Schneckenhaus, where all the snails of Switzerland are gathered in one place for your enjoyment. You may pick your favourite and boil it yourself before devouring it with cloves of dill and garlic. Moreover, further to the left of the city, where the river meets the mountain and the greengages gather, you may while away many a happy morning watching the moon rise amongst the brooms and the owls dancing their merry hornpipes - oh, so majestic!

There also, where the sweeps collect their silver salaries, on the corner of Lampenschirmstrasse and Kammgasse, is a world famous dry aquarium, by which one may admire the shrunken dessicated fishes of the world, gaily swimming like olives in the brine. My, for to stand there with a pocketful of snour, whistling for doughnuts like a Frenchman - it's been so long, so long.

I hope very much that you are having so very much of the entertainments in Basel. It is a great city, small but interminable, like a drizzled, but fairly so.

Welcome!

Welcome to the Forum and to Switzerland. Try not to let all the new overwhelm you. :)

It's spelt gnu, and it only overwhelms those who allow it to.

You must bend it to your will and show it who its master is. Mine makes tea for me every night after I've gone to bed.

It's the only way to be certain.

PS - DB is a nice guy, but he posts some weird stuff. Read at least twice before you believe anything he tells you. ;):p

Hello! I am also new in Switzerland from the UK! I am in Zurich though, so not much help to you. :msnsad:

I wouldn't say I'm homesick so much, but it is a bit of a shock to the system, and definitely not as easy to make friends here as in Glasgow!! I hope after you're break home for Easter you settle a bit more here :)

More than you think probably.
Basel - Zurich is only 50 mins on the train. And there's plenty of nice places to go near each main station.
I used to spend that sort of time without thinking crossing London on the Tube to meet wherever for pints - and believe me, 50 mins on a Swiss train home is an infinitely more pleasant experience than a bone rattling, stinking tube carriage. ;)

Welcome!

Use the Swiss tourist myswitzerland page, and guide books, there is tons of good stuff to do especially in summer, travel the country, play in the lakes and mountains and keep reminding yourself why this is a good place :) The making friends and integration will take time so just relax into it.

In that case, if you're feeling homesick and want a friendly face with a familiar accent feel free to send me a message! As Leafy pointed out, a train to Zurich is a lot easier, quicker and cheaper than a flight back to the UK :)

Hi,

welcome to Basel. I have lived here for over 26 years and there is always a lot going on. If you are on facebook, join some of the Basel groups such as Basel Folk, Basel Flouncers, Basel in English etc. There is also internations.org which arranges events. If you are interested in being involved in the theatre there is the Semi Circle and Basel Panto group. If you want to hear English voices, there are 2 irish bars: Paddy Reilys and Flanagans, also there are 2 english pubs : Pickwicks and the Fish Inn. Also there is an excellent Fish and Chip shop (Tramways). After you having been living here a while of course there are better local bars.

Have a look on meetup and you will find there are a lot of meetup groups in Basel.

I have never missed the UK and I can't see myself ever living there again.

Come and meet other people who have come to love living here.

Have fun

Martin

Yeah, I'm always happy to see another part or the country 😊 I'm also back to the UK for Easter, but we can sort something out after that. Hope you enjoy your break back home!
