Instant addiction

Hello - anybody there?
Found the Forum last week when looking for something else on the net. Before I made the discovery I was utterly content. I came to Switzerland in 1968, and though I made more than my fair share of blunders while I picked up SG the hard way, I settled down, later marrying a Swiss chap, had two daughters, moved a couple of times within Switzerland and had a two year spell in GB (my husband's form transfered him temporarily) where I felt as much a foreigner as I ever do here. I became very involved in Swimming, especially with the physically disabled, my daughter had a daughter, my life was interesting and very satisfying. I seldom contact with native English speakers in Switzerland at all. And now what has happened! The cloak of integration lies in tatters at my feet. My eyes burn from reading so many 'posts', my muscles ache from laughing, I burn with indignation at unfair dealings, feel the old frustration at the Swiss authorities returning...
In my younger days the advice given in all 'Help columns' in magazines was 'tell your mother' or 'join a youth club'. My mother is dead and I am a bit old for the youth club. Is there a OAP's Group in the Forum?
Thanks to you all,
Desperate.
Seriously, I think the Forum is brilliant.

If I could tear myself away from the Forum and the computer, my Greek might be improving faster. I'd love to have a 'try out' to see if I can make myself understood.

Only recently found it too and I think it's going to be great. Too many UK visitors recently to really make full use of it but I have it in my 'to do' list. So welcome from another Newbie.

Kalhmera
I take it that Dougal's Breakfast connection is a bit stronger than mine. I just had a couple of walking holidays on Greek islands. All well organised and with Greek speaking guide but I hate not being able to communicate in person at all. I'm still a real beginner but even trying a couple of words is fun. It also saves money. You don't say 'Yes' by mistake when asked by the waiter if you are paying for everyone!!!
Anyway, I really should make the effort.
Hope the above greeting came out in Greek letters. I pasted it in from Word.

Hiya Longbyt, here's me with my 27 years in Switzerland thinking that I'm the veteran. I know exactly what you mean about being transported back to your first day's, months and years, as the Forum had the same effect on me.

I've also learned lots about permits and the bureaucratic idiocy which once your a Swiss citizen falls by the wayside. I can actually converse knowledgeably now with Swiss people and their sometimes wild presumptions of the current state of affairs concerning migrants.

Welcome to the Forum.

Hello Longbyt, I've been knocking about this forum for the past 18 months or so but only moved to Zurich (finally) on Saturday. So I am really glad for people like you and oldhand are around to give us a nudge in the right direction when needed!

Talking of Oldhand, I see you joined this forum in April 2006... It's your forum anniversary!! Yeeehaa...

Any how, welcome to the forum.

Re: Instant addiction

Thanks to all of you for your replies. It was good to know that folk are really out there listening (i.e.reading). All too often these days one has the feeling that answering machines are talking to each other. It is comforting to know that if and when I have a problem or need information, I have access to so much knowledge and experience and can be in touch with so many caring people in such a short space of time.
Keep up the good work.

Found the Forum last week when looking for something else on the net. Before I made the discovery I was utterly content. ÖAnd now what has happened! The cloak of integration lies in tatters at my feet.
So, four years later and after two years as a Moderator on here, itís time to pick up my cloak of Integration and slip back through the curtain into Real Life again.

Big changes in our family are due shortly and there is no way I can Moderate on here and cope with them too. Maybe I can one day even get around to spending a bit of time on the hobbies that I so optimistically mentioned in my profile when I joined EF.

Iíve enjoyed working on here very much. Iíve learned quite a bit of computer based stuff, learned a lot about finding my way round the Internet and met some great people. Iíve left a trail of foot prints over the sandy surface of the forum. Most of them will be washed away by the next high tide, some of them will, I hope, Ďstick aroundí for a while. I hope that when I am no longer a Moderator the memories of unpopular decisions Iíve made will fade and that the inclination to dig up such incidents at regular intervals will decline.

I've asked to be released from my Moderator Duties and will then return to a normal EF status. I suppose in the way of the members of parliament in Switzerland, I could now call myself Ďalt modischí which is a very suitable title I suppose. See you around, guys.

Dear Lady L, you have been an excellent mod in here and it will be a sad place without your wiseness as a mod.

I have so much respect for you even when I didn't always agreed with you. I wish the changes you're gonna go through are positive and smooth.

Thanks for all your hard work and I hope to be able to read you again.

Oh, Longbyt..
I understand, but I am truly sad.

Thank you so much for your words of wisdom and support over the years, especially last year.

Hope to still see you around here, when you're not cycling the alps But real life is important too.

Quick - someone get a picture and get some mod DNA into a test tube. These mod types are becoming extinct quicker than a marshmallow at a FKK hide and seek competition.
