Please allow me to introduce myself...

Hello,
I just moved to Switzerland from the US about a month ago with my wife. We are living in a small village called Kleindoettingen, just north of Baden. My wife is working as a visiting scientist at the Paul Scherrer Institute. We love the small town life but also are feeling a bit isolated out here. I look forward to picking up some wisdom here on the site and hopefully to meeting some other EF folks at some point.
We are both active outdoor people and are loving Switzerland so far. We hope to get up in the mountains as much as possible for climbing (rock, ice and alpine), hiking, skiing (telemark/backcountry), etc.
We are constantly amused by some of the small cultural differences here, both good and bad, and it will be nice to have some other English speakers with which to share those .
Take care,
Jesse

Hi Jesse,

Welcome to Switzerland! Where are you from in the US?

I'm currently based in London, but my husband works in Baden, and I will be moving there next month (I currently commute every weekend). I will be working on my PhD from home, so I'll be happy to meet up if you want, as I'll definitely need breaks from my research!

If you haven't done so already, you should also join the 'expats in the Baden area' yahoo group.

Have a good weekend!

Hi Salamander

Welcome! We lived in Villigen for a year but have now moved to Lengnau. I work in Baden. I know what you mean about some of the cultural differences. We spent 7 years in Japan before coming back here and had to get used to them all over again!

Best of luck anyway! If you have any questions don't hesitate to post or PM.

I'm a man of little wealth and poor taste
I guess that's why the quote ends where it does.

...I've been around [Switzerland] for a long, long month...

Mag- I've lived in a bunch of places in the US but I just moved from Bar Harbor, Maine.

Hi,

Welcome to EF. I stay in Neuenhof which is 7min train ride from Baden and work in Turgi which is the next stop after Baden. There is another forum which might be of help: expatsbaden@yahoogroups.com My girlfriend and I are very active tennis members... and enjoy social life

Kleindoettingen has an excellent electronics shop where you can get excellent deals. Otherwise, yes, I think small town is the best way to describe it. Does PSI have any groups for visiting staff, specifically English speakers? As you are active outdoor types, you may want to try kayaking on the Aare this summer. Something different.

Someone already suggested the Baden expats group. There are members not only living in Baden but also towards Brugg, in Villigen, Remigen, so you never know who you might meet. Recently I think many of those members could be found watching soccer at Pickwick's in Baden.

Re: Please allow me to introduce myself...

welcome to the land of milk and..... Well I have been here for a very long time but still realize these culture thingies.
Someone as the old saying goes....you can take the girl out of the city but you can't take the city out of the girl
Don't take the way the Swiss treat you as personal...it takes really alot for them to let down their 'wall' when someone has an accent.
And remember....don't throw your garbage out after 10pm or on Sundays.

Have fun,
Dakota from the great big capital of Bern City

Really? I am not surprised with all of the rules here, but I am guilty of both so far. I like to bring the trash out at night because I hate being scrutinized by the neighbors for everything I do. I suppose if you are bringing trash out at night they might think you are not disposing of things correctly (stickers etc.). As far as Sundays go, they probably knew we were foreigners right away since we moved in on a Sunday and were doing a lot of banging around

Thanks everyone for all of the tips!!!

Invite him for a meal once. Lay a concerned hand on his arm and say if he's ever hungry again to just let you know; no-one should have to search the bins for food...

Bet he wouldn't do it again!

Ooops... sounds like he is an undercover garbage collector looking for traces of glass, metal or plastic... I would ask your landlord what is his/her true profession

Forgive me if I rub it in, but firstly I would check what's inside the cans to have an idea about a menu (or make inquire about booking details from your landlord)... just joking
