Moving to Basel 29th Oct 2015

Hi Everyone!

My name is Matt, I'm moving to Basel at the end of October 2015 as I have a job that I am starting in November. I'm extremely nervous to uproot my life here in the UK and move to Switzerland but it was a good opportunity and felt I needed a change.

I'm 34, gay (thought I should say), and into singing in a big way I'm a bass (low voice)and I'm hoping that I'll manage to find a singing group of some sort out there...maybe a good way to help me learn German (as currently I can only speak English).

I'm lucky enough to have one friend out there who I will stay with for the first weeks until I find a place to stay, but more friends would always be a bonus

Anyway hi! I look forward to meeting you all out there

Matt

Welcome to the forum and soon to Switzerland Matt.

Suggest you get hold of a copy of "Living and Working in Switzerland" by David Hampshire. It's full of useful info for both before and after you move and will help you understand the eccentricities of Swiss life. You can order from your local bookshop or via the internet.

Welcome matt! I'm sure you'll love it here, we moved here 9 months ago and are so happy here -we have zero plans go ever go back to the stinky uk... There are some really good things to do in basel, I went out on my own a couple of times and have made friends that way. I recommend joining all the Facebook groups, they're very active.

Re: Moving to Basel 29th Oct 2015

Hi Matt,

a big welcome to Basel.

My wife moved over in January and after commuting most weekends I have followed recently.
Basel is a great city and we love it, my only tip is that it really is a city of two seasons. When we came in winter it felt quiet, dark and sometimes even a bit bleak..... However, when the spring passes and the weather starts to warm up you'll see the most marvellous transformation! People reappear on the streets, tables and chairs hit the pavements and the river becomes even more the centre of attention with bars, restaurants, coffee shops etc all suddenly appearing along its banks. I don't think I've seen such a transformation in a city ever before.
I guess what I'm trying to say is don't think that the quiet Basel you find in November is the same for the whole year, there's loads more to look forward to!

They're not exactly what you're looking for, but you'll meet a decent group of people who can probably help you find a decent German singing group.

Search Facebook and meetup.com to find other social groups, plus of course the people on this forum in Basel have been known to be friendly on odd occasions.
