Re: New, and in need of information.

Only by a few francs a month. My insurance costs me 8 francs more a month than my OH as I don't work.

Bear in mind that if you can't afford to pay health insurance, you're unlikely to be able to afford to live here anyway so either would not get a permit to start with or may not have your permit renewed if you're on an L or B permit.

And as you can see if you play around with comparis.ch the amount you pay monthly depends on what model of insurance you choose and how big a deductible you go for. It's really a question of whether you pay a higher monthly amount with a low deductible so the insurance kicks in quicker if needed or go for a lower monthly payment and a high deductible where you have to pay the bills yourself before the insurance kicks in. That can depend on whether you have any pre-existing medical conditions to take into consideration where you may need regular check-ups, have to take medication, etc.

I wanted to expand on your question of health insurance. Health insurance in CH is NOT handled via the company as you allude to in your question (as is often the case in the USA). It is handled independantly between the individual and one of the many insurance companies that offer the basic health insurance that you must have (everyone in CH is insured).
Yes, my partner keeps correcting me on this, I just naturally connect the two as it is what I'm used to still. I should mean to say that he should be able to get a family plan that would include me in it through his policy holder.

How about a NO, NO and NO. There is no such thing as a "family plan" within the CH system.

You are A and he is B. Each of you can and will have a plan that is adapted this his own specific needs (age, deductable, insurance company etc.). There is no advantage of even going to the same company. You might decide to go for more of a HMO style of plan that is offered by company X. He might go with a plan where you can choose the doctor, go directly to specialists etc. that is better from company Z. It is really an "ŗ la carte" type of system.

Just to let you know, in a traditional CH household it is not unknown that the parents are on different types of plans/deductables with differenct companies and the children with again another company.

Well, the impression is given by comparis that family plans are available. Your choices are single, couple or family when choosing. Yes, you can choose single and do two/four/more checks for each person if you want to, but if you don't know the Swiss health system you'd probably assume that it's a family plan you're going for when you choose that option. Though in their case it would be the couple as they don't have children yet I guess.

Re: New, and in need of information.

Hi Iím interested to know how your permit situation worked out? Did you have any issues? What state were you civil partnered in?

Iím Greek and my partner is American. Iíve been offered a job in Zurich and we are going through the painful process of trying to get her a permit. Unfortunately they are saying they donít legally recognise the state of illusionist partnerships because apparently when same sex marriage was legalised in America, not all states were given federal recognition to their partnerships. This didnít seem to be an issue when she moved to the UK to live with me, she was given an eu family member permit, and we are using that as proof that she is family. We wonít know for some weeks now.

Again, Iíd be interested in knowing if you had any issues and how you got around them?

Thanks!

Welcome!

To be honest, the above approach isn't very nice. This forum is FILLED with information. Please do a search on your questions and THEN come back with any specific questions that haven't been answered. We love to help new people, but keep in mind that there are a lot of you, and answering the same questions (over and over) gets tedious.

It will be exciting and I wish you both well
Give him a break. He is greek 😉

She is also Australian. Dual national.

Krystina which passport do you use for travel purposes? Because the advice we give you can differ if you're here as an EU national or non-EU.

Re: New, and in need of information.

Greek.

Interesting that @PBN mentions family/couple plans. I also got the same impression from comparis.

I've made some spreadsheets to determine based on average attendance at doctor, which deductible would be the most viable option for me. My company did just inform me they have a discounted rate though, and that they'll pass on the info on my first day (hopefully by an insurance rep they have).

I'll pass on any info regarding couples plans for civil partnered same sex.
