| | Moving to join my husband in August
Hi
My name is Sarah and, as above, I am going to be joining my husband who currently lives and works in the Zurich district 8 area.
Im leaving behind a large circle of friend who i socialise with. I am a little nervous that I won't meet anyone or know where to go to meet people of a similar age and interest.
I will be without children but with two elderly dogs. I am going to try and find a job or maybe do some volunteer work.
If anyone can suggest any posts I can read and join that would be fabulous.
Thanks and look forward to hearing from you! |

Hi Sarah
Welcome to the forum. There's loads of information and musings on pretty much every topic you can think of, including being new and feeling out of place. Use the search function (top right) although you may have to use the Google option. There's one very good one called something like bored, unemployed, close to tears or something that is a lot more uplifting than it sounds!
Then... just dive in. Responses will be varied. Keep an eye on the OP (original poster) date as it's very easy to find yourself responding to a very old thread.
As for leaving a lot of friends behind, I'd recommend booking some in for a visit so you know that familar face will be along soon. It all helps.
Oh, and if you're a Jacob's Cracker fan, judging by a recent thread, you may want to stock up. They can be hard to find!
Best
Rufus

As you state "you have a large circle of friend who i socialise with" one assumes you are a sociable person with an easy contact.
This probably won't change with your move, so there is no reason why you will not find friends easily.
I should worry about this once you are here with your dogs, you'll soon meet similar minded people in the park out dfog walking ! |

Thank you, so far, all. Im over for a visit at the end of February. I might see if any likeminded people would like to meet up for an informal lunch. What does anyone think? Has it been done before does anyone know?

Welcome to the Forum.
I don't know if you'll get a lot of replies for a lunch meet-up but if you post helpful or interesting stuff you might get your name recognised which always helps. By the look of the Jacob's Cream Crackers thread you could improve your chances by mentioning that you'll have some packets of them to sell at cost price to those who at least come for coffee and a chat.

Hello Abhilasha
How are you finding Zurich? Have you found many groups to join?

Oliver Twist
Nelson Pub
Kennedys' Irish Pub
You'll meet a lot of English speakers of all ages and sobriety states.

It's "we could meet up for lunch and you could bring me some of your jacobs-cream-crackers which I will happily buy" and skip the cost price bit.

Hallo Sara,
Welcome to EF and soon to Zürich.
I have been here about 8 months, also joining OH, and socialising has proved easier than I expected, so don't worry too much.
Your furry friends will also provide good opportunities to exchange a few words with people, when you walk them.
I found this meet up www.meetup.com
while reading the EF and found it useful to meet like-minded people.
You may want to sign up and browse through, maybe you can find something interesting.
In view of your visit end of February, you could join the group "socialising over coffee": I met very nice and interesting ladies there, we might even see each other then.
Good luck
Gmaus

How are you finding Zurich? Have you found many groups to join? | | | | | Have a look at Z.I.W.A. , This is a women's group that meets up and is international. They organize a lot of fun things to do. Contact ahead so you can see what they do that might interest you. Can help you to settle in.

Hi Trixabella
Wondering how your visit over to Switzerland went last month. Did you manage to get a social lunch set up?
I also am a trailing spouse, no kids and have been here since August 2015, we live in Pfäffikon, Schwyz with our older yellow lab. Love walking and hikes but Al can't manage too far these days so may be when you are next over here we could go for a short amble with our dogs with a coffee afterwards.
