Hello !

Hello there EF community. I have been living in Neuchâtel for the past two years. I grew up in upstate New York in the US and lived in Montreal in Canada for 10 years in between. I'm 28 years old, grew up in the country-side, appreciate city life, and am living happily enough here. I am what some may call a "trailing spouse", since I moved here to join my University sweetheart who works in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

I have admittedly found myself browsing EF from time to time. I am finally introducing myself because, well, I suppose it is time. I seldom get to speak English over here and I worry sometimes that if I don't practice I will forget one of my native languages. So I guess I'm here for some good old anglophone comfort. My mother is French, so I never had to try too hard to pick up French, and luckily for me we are living in French speaking Switzerland.

My greatest challenge living here is adjusting to the job search life. I thought it wouldn't last too long, but here I am, still searching. I am still confident that I can build a meaningful life here, even though it hasn't been as easy as I expected to find work. There are many ways to enjoy a meaningful life while being jobless, especially since I have the good fortune of having a partner who is happy to support me until I get my foot in the door somewhere. Some people really do get all the luck.

I took advantage of moving to Switzerland to take up skiing again, and am even starting to try ski-touring which I'm enjoying far more than I thought I would. I don't write very often these days either, so apologies for the construction of my introduction.

So that's me, right now, in a nutshell.

Re: Hello !

Welcome to the forum. Are you making it clear on your CV that you're an EU national and already have a permit to live and work here?

Re: Hello !

Bienvenue to the mighty Neuch. Do you live in La Chaux-de-Fonds or Neuchâtel?

Might be useful to share a little about the kind of job you are looking for and what qualifications and experience you have.

Is your partner Swiss from Neuch? (I am a local, but lived in UK for 40 years, married to a Brit, now back in retirement). I know some lovely young Brits in La Chaux-de-Fonds, and would be happy to arrange a meet up for coffee one day.

Thank you! Yes, it is front and center! I wasn't fully leaning on my network in the beginning, but now I don't hesitate to ask for help and there is a definite improvement in prospects. I'm sure once I've found work I'll wish I was jobless again..

Hi Odile, and thank you. I live in Neuchâtel with my French husband. He has been settled here far longer than me, since I resisted the move for four years.

I have a Bachelor of Commerce in Business Management and 5 years of experience in customer service and operational management in agriculture, graphic design & commerce. I am tricky to place because my goals changed when I moved here. (Think no longer family business track). I am trying to get an entry level position in finance because I'm working towards the CFA charter now, and to successfully achieve this I'll bee needing some experience in finance. Really what I want to do is build my business and financial acumen. I actually had a job interview today that I believe went relatively well, so my fingers are crossed and I am hoping to hear some positive feedback next week.

I would be thrilled to meet up over coffee in La Chaux-de-Fonds! Will you be around next week? I guess we can organize via the PM thing?

Thank you! I change my approach depending on which company / individual is targeted. Ultimately I've found that the best way to get an interview is to have a connection who will recommend me. I guess that's why it's taken me so long, what with rebuilding the network from scratch.

Re: Hello !

Do not live in either La Chaux-de-Fonds or Neuchâtel - but somewhere in the mountains near French border. Busy next week with grandkids coming from UK for half-term- much freer after that- Neuch would be easier.

Re: Hello !

Welcome to Neuchâtel. There are quite a few English speakers in the area.
I live just outside Neuchâtel but happy to meet up for a coffee and a chat some time.

Belgianmum and Odile, do you already know each other? Perhaps a group meet up is in order?

Re: Hello !

I forgot to mention in my last post that I am going to the Valais tomorrow and won't be back until Friday, So this weekend, or next week would work for me. I don't have a car, but I get around with public transport. Do you ladies have 8 - 6 jobs, or do you have some flexibility during your weeks?

Re: Hello !

I do a few hours teaching a week but am pretty flexible. Monday, Tuesday or Thursday afternoon works best for me.
