Moving from Michigan US to Zurich!

Hello Everyone!

I am excited to join you all in the forum. Tons of good stuff here! My wife and I both work a multi-national company and she got an offer and I am still searching job opportunities. My daughter is 15 years old and going to be a 10th grader. Got confirmation of Zurich International school. We are now looking for housing in Thalwil. Plan to move (From Detroit Michigan) by the end of July before school year starts. My wife and I ever traveled, business and private, in Switzerland quite a few of times. Both of us are pretty exciting. My daughter is very nervous as we just moved from Shanghai China to US three years ago. She just starts to make some friends here and we are about to move again! I hope she would get through it as quick as possible. By the way all of us are Chinese. I look forward chatting with you through the forum!

Warm Regards,
Allen He

Re: Moving from Michigan US to Zurich!

Welcome to the forum and hopefully soon to Switzerland. I say hopefully because you say she has a job offer, but has it been approved by the Swiss authorities yet? The non-EU hiring criteria is outlined here:

https://www.sem.admin.ch/sem/en/home...zulassung.html

Employers must make every effort to find a Swiss/EU national before they can hire a non-EU. If you haven't had confirmation that your permits are approved book nothing - flights, accommodation, etc - yet because there's always a chance they could be refused. You'll also need to arrange Type D visas for all of you with the Swiss embassy that covers your area of the US, these won't be issued unless the permits are approved, but you need to get the paperwork in now.

As far as a job for you goes, I'd wait until you get here and get your permit. Why? Because that will bypass the non-EU hiring rules when it comes to looking for a job as dependent B permit holders don't have to get permission to work, they just need to present their employment contract to the cantonal migration office. But this only works once you're here and have your permits, not before.

I assume you're already familiar with your US tax filing obligations, but you may find it difficult to get a bank account here due to FATCA. Only UBS, Credit Suisse and PostFinance are likely to accept you as customers and of course you'll have to sign W-9 forms to allow the bank to send the account details on to the IRS.

As well as the wealth of info in the various sticky threads here on the forum I also suggest you get hold of a copy of "Living and Working in Switzerland" by David Hampshire. It's full of useful info for both before and after you move. You can order it from your local bookshop or via the Internet.

Re: Moving from Michigan US to Zurich!

Thank you for the information and advice Medea! The employer helped her on work permit application and she got it. And the VISA application was also completed. It is good to know that there may be a little difficult to have a bank account. What should I do to open an account? Which one of the three have a better service?

Re: Moving from Michigan US to Zurich!

Welcome, Allen!

Medea Fleecestealer's info is extremely helpful for you to understand what is really involved. There is so much to figure out when you move -- I've found most of the Swiss systems very sensible, but they are very precise about them -- so it's great to have a clear explanation in English.

At the same time, my experience was very similar to yours, a half dozen years ago, when my wife took a job with a major multinational based here. Fortunately, they took care of everything to get us started -- visas, permits, bank account, insurance recommendations, initial lodging, recommendation to the new landlord when we found permanent housing, etc. etc.

Check out the discussion started last week by another trailing spouse moving from the midwest to Zurich, at:
https://www.englishforum.ch/introduc...erland-us.html

Good luck!

Re: Moving from Michigan US to Zurich!

The bank/tax advice only applies if you're US citizens or Green Card holders.

Has the employer also applied for dependent's permits for you and your son?

Re: Moving from Michigan US to Zurich!

i would stay in the US, if i were you. Switzerland is the worst country on earth!
i would not move to zurich if i were you. unless you want to drastically decrease your consumption possibilities.
e.g.
lower housing space,
no car,
lower food consumption,
lower water consumption ( restaurants in CH only serve 0.5L bottles for 8chf+. Eerywhere else in the world restaurants serve 0.75L bottles at max 2 chf, in the second most expensive country)
less healthcare

Begs the question why you're still living here then doesn't it? Since you hate it so much. And yes, I did go back to through most of your nine pages of complaining posts.

If you dislike it so much go back to Italy for pete's sake.

soon l'm moving to a human rights friendly city: Berlin.
the reason of my posting in this thread is to persuade the OP not to come to CH, for his own good. because I care about everyone, not just about myself.

No, you only care about what you call reasonable housing and having a car whether you need one or not. Oh, and that water only comes in 0.5ltr bottles in restaurants here and not 0.75ltrs.

that's what i said in zurich water comes at 0.5L bottles or even 0.33L!
in Berlin, just like in the rest of the world 0.75L.

conclusion: life standard in berlin is way better than the one in zurich.
the example of water in restaurant can be extended to every consumption good.
e.g. the apparment of a waiter in berlin is way larger than the apartment of a swiss banker in Zurich.

P.s.
i've already been in berlin many times and never complained about anything.

First thing to complain about is their total lack of Swiss.

actually i was once upset about a restaurant there, Wannseeterrassen.
i was billed 12€ just for water. and that piece of shit of a waiter even got mad because i didn't leave him the "compulsory" 10 % tip.
however that was the only bad experience i had in berlin and i guess that in any restaurant in zurich it would be even worse.

Re: Moving from Michigan US to Zurich!

Tom - pls, stop the groan fest! No mo.

Aresid - you are only considering a place to be good in terms of silly services. Parking fee, night bus fees, a bottle of water in a resto. Who evaluates a quality of life based on that, really. It is like judging a place by opening hours of various icecream stores or candyshops. I rarely eat icecream and don't care for candy but have lived long enough in Berlin eons ago to know why are all the Germans in CH trying hard to make it here. And so many. Do you think it is because of the parking fees...night buses and expensive bottles of water in restos? If not...then why?
