Moving to Basel

Hello All,
Would like to say hello to everyone. My name is Asanga Costa. Originally from Sri Lanka, and currently working and living in Toulouse, France. Hoping to make a move to Basel at the end of July.

My wife and I have a son, now two years old. So will have to go through all the steps of settlling down with a family, finding the essential services and all that good stuff.

We moved to Hamburg,Germany in 2006 from Canada, and made the mistake of not doing enough proper planning and gathering information before the move.

This caused us a whole lot of hassle later that could have been avoided.

Shifting from Germany to France (for a temporary work assignment) was just as hectic!! So hopefully we have finally learned our lesson!!!

Having looked at some of the threads here it looks as if there is a gold mine of essential info here, not found on regular websearches.

Hopefully this will also be a good way for us to make a couple of friends in Basel too

Thank you,

Asanga

Re: Moving to Basel

Welcome to the Forum.
Good to hear that you have learned your lesson and this time intend to make use of the wealth of information this Forum offers. However, it is a Forum and not an Enquiries Office, so you will certainly find conflicting opinions and ideas too.
There is also the opportunity of meeting up with folk in similar situations and profit from the experience of those who have been here longer.
Hope all goes well this time round.

Re: Moving to Basel

Longbyt,
Thank you for the welcome. Yes, the aim is a proper plan this time, with hopefully little last minute running around. And also hopefully less aggravation for the 'Significant Other' that way too.
She and the baby are basically who would be 'discovering Basel' while I am at work. So, I will be grateful to get any and all info that I can get my hands on

Thanks

Asanga

Re: Moving to Basel

Hello all!
My name is Anna and I and my husband are new at this forum. We and our two children will move to Basel from Uppsala, Sweden, in August. I will initially stay at home with our now 3 months old son and our daughter of 3 years will be part time at an English speaking daycare. My husband is originally from Estonia but has lived in Uppsala for 10 years and so our daughter is bilingual in Swedish and Estonian. He starts working in Basel in September.
We look forward to discovering Switzerland and I hope to find a play group for our son and get to know other mums in the Basel area. I speak fluently German, English and ok Estonian. Of course it would also be nice to meet Swedish or Norwegian speaking people, if there are any .

All the best!
Anna

Re: Moving to Basel

Hello Asanga,

We have an apartment located in the west part of Basel. Since we have moved, it is available. It is 3.5 rooms, on the top floor and is modern and very comfortable. If you would be working near the airport, it is a pefrect location as it is only a 7 minute drive.

Where will you be working?

Basel is a nice city. You and your family will like it.

Kind regards,
Wendypunkt

Re: Moving to Basel

Hi Wendy,
I moved to Basel at the beginning of August. Working for Jet Aviation.

Starting to get around Basel and yeah the family likes it so far.

I am currently in the company flat, but looking to move to something else since it is a bit too small for the three of us!!

Yes I am looking for a flat and would definitly like to take a look. Since your place is near the airport, it would be a nice location for me also.

Since I am a newbie here, I can't seem to locate a PM message option here. So I can give you my email if you wish to contact me.

Thanks for the replies. Hopefully somewhere along the line would be nice to meet everyone at a curry nite or two!!!

And if there is an idea to do a pot luck curry nite one of these days,we can do a couple of dishes, Sri Lankan style of course.

Cheers

Asanga

Hi Asanga,

Glad I came across this thread, we are Sri Lankans too, now living in Malaysia. My hubby got a job there in basel and we are planning to move in december. I'd appreciate if you could help me out with some information.

What do they indicate by 3.5 rooms in basel apartments, is it purely bed rooms or it includes other rooms too?

Is it advisable to bring our fridge and washing machine, if we bring can we fit them in swiss apartments?

What are good locations for apartments? it's only 2 of us.

Thank you
