Re: New American in Zürich :-)

Hi Kristy,

I will be moving to Winterthur from the US November 1. Winterthur is about 20 mins outside of Zürich. I intend to take an intensive German course which will have me in Zürich Monday through Friday. I would be happy to meet up someday for lunch when I'm downtown.

A little background: I am 36, married to a Swiss-national and we have a three-year-old daughter. My profession is corporate law. I have not lined up a job in CH, as of yet; I intend to initially focus on learning the language and getting accustomed to the country. Our move is open-ended.

Let me know what your schedule is like!

Thanks for the explanation lol. I was wondering about that, and the "thank you" button, which I'm guessing also shows up after ten posts.

SDCallinCH, that sounds great! Once you get here and get settled, PM me, and we'll go for coffee or a beer (whichever you prefer)

Just went for an evening walk around Kreis 4 near Langestrasse. Loved it! Lots of bars, restaurants, and I heard every language possible spoken.

I thought it's a really nice area to hang out

lol, is it really that bad?

I get the feeling that you see some people sitting outside and enjoying a beer with friends on the cheap, and think 'look at all these drunken vagrants!' - and then you go to a restaurant and pay CHF 10 for a beer so you can feel civilized

Re: New American in Zürich :-)

Some of the back streets have Ok bars and restaurants. But Langstrasse itself is really shitty. Go on a Saturday around 12 midnight between Militärstrasse and Helvetia Platz.
Just drunks and garbage. And alot of aggression.

Hier is a normal Saturday night in the Long Street

Niederdorfstrasse is much nicer

Hi Kristy
Don't worry about being American - I'm an English Australian, Brits being just about the least popular nationality in Europe at the mo!
Why would you say "Brits being just about the least popular nationality in Europe at the mo!".

I would say that, within Switzerland, the US is the least popular nationality in Europe at the moment.

But the OP is a 37 y/o doctoral student working in the Environmental Science field. So unless they've been sent personally by Trump is very welcome.

Correction: If sent personally by Trump then it could lead to some interesting debates

Welcome OP, and good luck with your work. Was in Texas quite a few times in past years.

Another source to meet people might be https://www.meetup.com

Hi everybody, I'm Kristy, and I moved to Zürich from Texas this past July. I've been reading the posts here for advice for the past few months, but this is my first actual post.:-)

A little about me.....I'm a 37 y/o doctoral student working in the Environmental Science field and my project is estimated to require 3-4 years. I moved here with my little chihuahua-dachshund mix, Paco. I'm working on my German, and am slooooowly making my way through the residency process (I knew getting a bank account might be difficult, but geez!!).

It's just Paco and I here, and this is my first time doing the expat thing. It's been a lonely introduction to Switzerland. If there are any expat folks interested in meeting up in the Zürich area, I'd love to go out for a coffee or a drink sometime!

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Welcome to Zurich and the community, from a fellow American in Zurich!

In addition to this community, I would highly suggest to checkout "Meetup" for group-oriented activities to meet others and socialize -- the hiking events are great and the way I met most of my friends within the first 2 years of living here.

I don't have much of an accent lol. Actually, central Texas was heavily settled by Germans. There is a part of the hill country where they have their own German dialect. There are very few native speakers left, so the nearby universities are rushing to get it recorded before it dies out completely. If you REALLY want to hear German with a Texas accent, here you go:

Thanks foofdall! I've tried a few of the different meetups so far, and am looking forward to trying out some others.

Hi Kristy -

I'm an expat too living here in Zurich from the US. I spent 7 years living in Texas. I really miss the food sometimes (good ole Tex-Mex). I would be interested in meeting up to have a drink in the future. I'm a woman in my 40s.
