Moving to Langenthal

Hi,

My Swiss wife and I will be moving to Switzerland in 2018. She will be seeking employment and has a background in economics, finance, and financial planning.I will be retiring from a financial printing (SEC compliance documents) management position, collecting social security and looking for english-speaking jobs, work from home or other type of opportunities. As well, I will be taking care of our 4 and 6 year old daughters -- primary activity until I can justify paying for some time of day-mom daycare type of arrangement. My wife hopes to land a job within 6 months. She previously worked for the Cantonal government in Bern in economics (13 years ago).

I am looking for any helpful information on such a move -- things to be aware of, helpful hints, advice, ideas for a smooth move, etc. Ideas for earning income part time as I learn German (basic knowledge and skills). We are selling our house in Phoenix, camper, vehicles etc. before moving, first my wife in January and me to follow once I take care of closing down here.

Cheers!

Terry

Re: Moving to Langenthal

Well, a fair amount in your thread here:

https://www.englishforum.ch/introduc...wiss-wife.html

You could also order a copy of "Living and Working in Switzerland" by David Hampshire. It's full of useful info for both before and after you move. You can order it from your local bookshop or via the internet.

If you're thinking of buying a property here again your American "taint" may interfere with that plan. Only UBS, Credit Suisse and PostFinance will consider you for a basic checking/salary account and the same goes for your wife if you want to make it a joint account. Mortgages and investment accounts are another matter however, you might be lucky enough to find a bank manager who'll consider it, but there's no guarantee of getting either.

As for more general stuff, well with two small daughters you need to be aware that most apartment blocks here have communal laundry facilities and often you're assigned a day and time period when you can do your laundry. If it's a big block then that may well be the only time you can do it - so if you want less restrictions on that look for newer build blocks where each apartment has its own washer/dryer installed or look to rent a house.

Re: Moving to Langenthal

Medea,

Yes, thanks for finding my old post.

The book sounds like a good idea. The bank situation we have heard about but need to keep in mind. Also thanks for reminder on the laundry facilities (especially with 2 children) -- we need to keep this on our wants list as we look at housing.

Vielen dank.

Terry
