New Girl, Old Lurker

Hi there,

I've been lurking in the forums every since I've moved to Zurich 3 years ago and now decided it's time to pop my head out!

Used to be a PhD student at UZH but my contract ended and I didn't want to continue anymore (long story behind it). Am now a NEET (Japanese abbreviation of not in employment, training or education) struggling to find a job anywhere; if you have any referrals for entry level jobs in biology / pharmaceutics please send them my way! I speak many languages... Except German; I have the grammar knowledge of a 4 year old.

That's the current me in a nutshell.

Welcome to the forum, but what permit do you have? As a non-EU (Malaysian) citizen you need some type of permit to be here unless you're now considered either unemployed and receiving unemployment benefit or you're a tourist.

I am currently unemployed and am trying to get my unemployment benefits... Which requires a valid B permit... Which expired in December, the same time my contract ended. Note that I wasn't even given the decency of 3 months notice; I was informed by a 3rd party indirectly in late October! The migration office did send me a letter saying they'll only make a decision on my migration status if I send in a confirmation of graduation, which I don't have since I was squandered of it (again, a painful and long story). Although I've already successfully registered with RAV and have abided by their rules, I don't think I'd get paid for January since the Arbeitslosenkasse has asked for a copy of a valid B-permit.

What choice do I have but to go home, even if I've grown fond of living here...

Sad that you only signed up once it was (pretty much) clear they'd throw you out.

We could have saved you.

NEET is a known term in continental Europe too, Italy especially. But if you are looking for employment you are not a NEET.
Sorry about your situation but without a permit I doubt you can find a job short of trying another PhD, it's very hard for local graduates too.

Sad, yes, but liberating at the same time; time again to flex my adaptability muscles and move to somewhere new / readjust. It also adds to my list of truths behind the "perfect" country which is Switzerland.
I think out of all the cities that I've spent my nomadic life in, my years in the UK are still better than what I've experienced here.

I've been scarred after this experience and won't be doing it again anytime soon. I've heard from a former colleague of the case as well.
Oh well, it'd be better I look for a job back home in comfort instead of trying to hold it out here.
