Moving to Rapperswil

Hey! I'm Ashley, just thought I'd introduce myself.
I'm British, currently living in Sweden, and I'll be moving to a new job in Rapperswil sometime in February; first language is English, and I also speak Swedish, but no German (yet!).
I'm a zoo keeper, I like music, theatre and beer. Any advice on Switzerland in general is appreciated (especially finding a place to live!).

Thanks!

Re: Moving to Rapperswil

Welcome to the forum and soon to Switzerland. Let me guess: working at the Knie zoo perhaps?

You'll find lots of info in the various sticky threads here on the forum and I also suggest you get a copy of "Living and Working in Switzerland" by David Hampshire. It's full of useful info for both before and after you move. You can order it from your local bookshop or via the internet.

Re: Moving to Rapperswil

Hi Ashley,

I'd look in Comparis.ch there is an English version under Immobilien, it covers a large range of apartment/living websites to search. I find it quite helpful, also for insurances, autos, etc...

Good luck!

Yep, I'll be working at Knies
Thanks for the advice, I'm looking mostly for a shared room for the time being I think, seems like the easiest/cheapest option to begin with.

Re: Moving to Rapperswil

Temporary accomodation may appear here:

https://marktplatz.uzhalumni.ch/de/category/4/offer

Beware of the scammers. If it is too cheap, it ain't good (but also regular priecs may be a scam, so...).

How much is too cheap? For room/flat on offer in the internet, on public, free sites, less than 600 CHF for a room in a shared flat is definitely suspicious, less than 1200 for a flat as well.

Best solution: be ready to spend a lot for the first 1-3 months, have a look at professional companies offering furnished flats ... spending a lot is better than spending too much.

Welcome to the forum, for a person who likes hiking and swimming I think you've landed in the right place. Good luck with the house search!

LOL, I only read OP's post. I figured you'd give OP the usual legal links, which I don't need to know about.

Still "jealous". When I was a kid, the circus was what I was heading for.

Re: Moving to Rapperswil

Yes, I've been a big circus fan for years too. Sadly, haven't managed to see Knie or any other circus for some years now - just don't get organised to visit them. Made 2-3 holiday trips to Switzerland to see the shows here.

Thanks for the replies, I'll be working at the kinderzoo in Rapperswil, so not on the show as such; very much looking forward to it though

Congratulations and welcome. The kinderzoo is quite impressive and I'm continually surprised by how close people can actually get to the animals. I had never seen anything else quite like it before. And then the live shows and all of the crowd participation. The playgrounds. Just such a well done place for kids I think.

Rapperswil is one of my favorite towns to visit. I wish a good experience there.

+1 for the “other” end of the lake, and the zoo (miss it in the winter when closed)

Re: Moving to Rapperswil

I love Rappi, lived there fore a year. The only thing is if you need a car and go through the Dampf is very traffic jammeeedd.
But the connections are good to Zurich and other places.
It also has the SOB Bahn which connects you quickly to the mountains.

Looks like a Riviera in the summer. I great for running, I trainned for my marathon there.

Have fun, I always consider going back to Rappi....
