Considering move to Switzerland this summer

Dear Forum,

What a wonderful resource we have stumbled upon as we consider moving to Switzerland this summer. My name is Chris, and I am a certified public accountant as well as a professor in yoga studies at a university in Los Angeles, California. I have always had a passion for business and yoga and thus my different backgrounds. My wife is Swiss, and we met in Hawaii back in 2013. We just had our first child and are considering moving to Switzerland this summer for a host of reasons, with our child’s best interests in mind.

I am actually writing this post from Zürich, as we do come here twice a year during the winter and summer breaks from the university in the United States. We love Zürich, have lots of appreciation for the swiss life, and look forward to meeting fellow English speaking residents here whether we move to Switzerland or not permanently.

Because my wife was born and raised in Zürich, she is of course fluent in Swiss German and I am slowly studying German so that I can make my way through town with more ease. Such a fun and yet challenging endeavor!

I look forward to joining your conversations here and again thank the moderators for this wonderful resource.

All the Best,
Chris

Welcome to the forum. :) Lots of research to do.

Firstly, you need to check if your qualifications would be accepted here for accountancy work if that is what you hope to do here. Contact this organisation.

Also as an American you'll find it difficult to get a bank account here due to the US's FATCA law. This will also affect your wife if she has a Green Card and/or you decide to have a joint bank account here. You/she will need to sign a W-9 form to allow the bank to send the account details on to the IRS. Any foreign account, i.e. outside of the US, which comes to an aggregate figure of more than $10,000 at any time of the year must also be reported on an FBAR form. Better check on the California state tax side as well.

Thanks to you all for the warm welcome.

And thank you so much for the audit website as well as the info regarding bank accounts. Indeed lots of research to do and so glad this helpful community exists!

I am in the process of looking at potential career transitions and any helpful links for getting help with making such a transition are much appreciated. I am particularly interested in Swiss hiring customs and their specific CV requirements. I’ll begin to explore the forum for these and other related topics.

All the best...

Well, if you can manage it hold off the job hunting until you move and get your family reunification permit since that will allow you and any employer to bypass the non-EU hiring criteria.

I am an American who married a Swiss too. ;)

I did not pursue job opportunities until we moved here and were fully registered. (My husband had secured a job.)

There is a big opportunity for you as an accountant in this country for American expats who need help completing/paying their taxes in the US. The options currently available are astronomically expensive. I don't know if you need any special Swiss requirements secured (besides a permit), but this is could be something to consider.

How nice to meet someone who also married a Swiss. We are so lucky!

This is really good to know, regarding expat tax returns. I’ll look into the option if/when we do decide to move here. With all the recent tax legislation in the United States I can only imagine it is in high demand. Thanks for the suggestion.
