Round 2- Moving Back!

My family was fortunate to move to Zurich from the US 10 years ago. We spent a few years in Zurich and my oldest was speaking German fluently before we moved back to the US when they were nearly 5 years old. They learned by being in preschool 4x a week. At home we only speak English.

We have since been in the US for 5 years and are fortunate to be moving back to Zurich. We are thrilled! About 2 years in to our return to the US, we felt the itch to move back and realized how green the grass is in Switzerland.

It's a pity, but my oldest who is now 10 years old didn't continue their German speaking in the US. Where we lived, the options were limited. I'm wondering if they will catch on a bit easier if we place them in a local school because the brain might remember or re-learn it faster...? Our timetable in Zurich is 3 years but could be longer if the opportunity presents itself.

Excited to catch up on all the threads from EF.

Re: Round 2- Moving Back!

Hi,
If the goal is to get the kids back into German then I would strongly recommend the local school. Our kids moved here at 8/10 (english Canadians) and found out quickly to play soccer at recess speaking german was required so they learned the dialect quickly. The international school kids have a harder time integrating outside of school.

Good luck with the move

Couldn't agree more. My kids went into the local school (from an International School) at ages 6 and 12. They both adapted to the language within a few weeks/months.
