Hi, I'm Micheal

Hi, I'm Micheal.

From Manchester in the UK, but spend time in Zurich.
I'm aged 57, self employed, qualified Decorating Contractor, also a trained Secutity Operative.
Hoping to be spending even more time in Switzerland this year, and will be looking for work.

Learning the language, and any tips will be gratefully accepted.

Re: Hi, I'm Micheal

Welcome! A tip would be to try speaking German no matter the mistakes, try not to switch to English when others switch to English...Swiss people really appreciate the effort and try to help

Enjoy Switzerland!

Thank you for the welcome, very much appreciated.

As for my name... I think someone spelt it wrong when I was born, and it just stuck.

Hiya Micheal,
Welcome to the forum. Best way to learn the language is to get among the folk.
All the best.

Re: Hi, I'm Micheal

Hi Micheal,

I'm also from Manchester but i haven't lived there since 1991.....

Good luck with finding work.

My advice is to accept any invitation - to anything. You only make new friends if you go out and meet people. And of course meeting new people might also throw up work opportunities.

Try and speak as much German as you can without worrying about the mistakes......and lastly...don't look at the prices in the grocery store. There is nothing you can do about the cost of things and getting upset about it doesn't help.

Could be that, or could be there was an Irish nurse writing it down. It's the same as the Irish spelling but without the accent.

A Scottish friend of mines is called Tarbart. His grandfather was from Tarbert Ness in Scotland and he was supposed to be named after there in his honour, but the registry office got the spelling wrong.

There is this probably apocryphal story about a visitor to new York in the 1920s, who, while on walking along some back street, sees a sign saying "Lars Olaf Svenson's Chinese laundry". Thinking it somewhat strange he goes inside and is met by a Chinese gentleman. He asked, who is "Lars Olaf Svensson"? The Chinese guy say, "that's me". He says, "when I was being regsitered on Ellis Island there was a Swede in the line in front of me. When the registry officer said 'name?, he said, 'Lars Olaf Svensson'. Without looking up, the registrar asked me 'name? and I said 'Same Same'."

Re: Hi, I'm Micheal

So Micheal, have you arrived yet? Or has learning that all people seem to be interested in is the spelling of your name put you off the idea?

Goody. Hope customs won't claim a misspelling in your passport.

Re: Hi, I'm Micheal

An Expat Wife...

Thanks for the advice. I know all about the prices, been back and forth from the UK for the last couple of years. I love the place, such a beautiful country.
Where in Manchester? I'm originally from Oldham. I'd never go back, apart from to visit my old Mum
