Moving from England to Switzerland

Hi everyone, my name is Ashleigh, I'm 26 years old and I'm about to experience the most life-changing moment of my life to date; move from my home country, England to Switzerland. I'll be quitting my job, taking two suitcases of clothes, two guitars and my cat with me! I'll be moving in with my Swiss-German boyfriend (we have been in a long distance relationship for just under a year and friends for over 3 years). Initially we'll be moving to live with his Grandma until I find a job and we can get our own flat. So the reason why I'm posting, well firstly, I'm so nervous and wondered if anyone has had a similar experience and could offer any advice? And secondly, I want to make some new friends! We'll be living in Zunzgen initially, close to Basel!

Hello

All I can say is take the leap - but beware of the Language barriers in Switzerland. Since your boyfriend is Swiss, it will help you from a permit perspective. Depending on your profession, you will have some struggle getting a job, especially during this Pandemic.

You are young and Switzerland is a beautiful place to live!

All the best,

Hi Ashleigh, welcome to the forum.
As you take your cat along (they don't like travelling much), you have your permit sorted out? You can always go busking.

All the best,
Thank you for your reply and lovely to meet you! I agree Switzerland is beautiful! As for the language, yes this is a difficulty at the moment, but I'm very determined to learn German. The hardest thing I've found when visiting so far is that Swiss-German is like a completely different language all together haha!

I have a residence permit already, and my profession is in communications and marketing. have been applying for a few jobs (more global/international companies) and have an interview coming up, so fingers crossed!

Hi Curley! Thank you for your message. Lovely to meet you.

I'm really thankful that the journey isn't too long for the cat. But I think it's worth it. She'll be so happy with a big garden to play in, instead of my flat!

I have a residence permit yes, my boyfriend helped me to get it. Haha and if it comes to it, I may have to busk!! I have a job interview coming up so going to see how that goes!

3Wishes, as you merged the OP's answers (you did it while I thanked the second one, which is why I noticed) did you also teach the newbie, how to merge her answers in a PM?

I can't see who is quoting, replying or thanking/groaning at the time I merge. So it's nothing personal. And I generally don't send newbies PMs until after they make several posts that could have been multi-quotes. Most newbies figure it out on their own after a merge or two.

Re: Moving from England to Switzerland

Zunzgen is nice, just up from Sissach. Sissach has quite a few foreigners living there.

Re: Moving from England to Switzerland

Hello Ashleigh and Welcome! Should say Grüezi 🙂

Basel area is beautiful, like rest of Switzerland 😉
It's a plenty of stuff to do here, swimming in Rhein, easy hiking, crossborder trips, strolling in Basel /Baselland.
I would recommend to join a language course to make new friends/learn German, Swiss dialect.
The job searching might be a bit complicated due to pandemic, but try what you can.
Good luck!
