Nonsense. It's not too late at all. They will learn quickly and have over half a year to cram before even arriving.

I'd say these ages are on the edge and really depend on if this is a long-term or permanent move of the family or if just part of a career journey. You also need to keep an eye on where the children may want to attend University and which system would be best for that.

We didn't want our children to lose time or capabilities in their academic careers by them having to learn fluency in a new language at the same time as beginning to learn more complex subjects.

Learning a language is one thing; simultaneously learning academic subjects in that language is another.

Way too late for the older one to get to Gym, and marginal at best for the younger one. However, if the OP is willing to entirely embrace the Swiss system, allow them to repeat years, then be happy with apprenticeship or two, with additional further education, through to starting a university degree at 25 or later... Then yes, it could work.

Thank you all for the kind welcome and guidance, really appreciated. The best parts from the advice so far is to pick the school first. Ours will be attending an international school because of poor (for now ) German, so that will clearly influence us. Also some great tips on areas to avoid. So thank you all so much for your helpful replies.
My two older daughters (2nd and 4th grades when we got here) went into local Swiss schools directly here in Allschwil. They were put into a group with other kids who didn't know German, and it was outstanding in terms of getting them up to speed with the language. They both ended up joining their regular Swiss classes this fall, despite spending a good chunk of the spring doing homeschool because of corona virus, and are actually among the better ones in their German classes.
